Pros: Stable, Stable, Stable, great graphics, faster load time than previous
Cons: Not full 3rd party support yet
The Bottom Line: OS 10.1 is absolutely the best Apple system ever. Unfortunately it is taking the 3rd party software developers some time to support X.
scottcolson's Full Review: Apple Mac OS 10 Full Version (M7686LL/A)
I bought an iBook a few months ago (unfortunately, epinions lost my review about 3 months ago and never found it - I haven't had the motivation to sit down and write about the computer again since then). It came with OS 9.1 and OS X installed. I first started playing with OS X and had a hard time getting used to it. I let it go for a while, used 9.1 and forgot about X.
Then, my copy of 10.1 showed up.....
I installed it and started playing with it again. 10.1 is the most stable Apple system I have ever worked with. (My Apple experience dates back to my first Apple IIe in the 1980s). It loads and shuts down much faster than previous operating systems.
The graphics are really impressive. I understand it's only aesthetic, but it really looks nice!
The Dock is a great way to manage your most frequently used applications and hide windows that you want to get out of the way. It's incredibly easy to use and a great tool.
Many of the applications have become OS X compliant: AppleWorks 6.0, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office, Mail (the email program that came with OS X). I really like the new Appleworks and the Mail program is awesome! I haven't forked out the $450 bucks for Office for X, but it's supposed to be amazing.
Unfortunately, many of the other applications are not OS X compliant, so you have to run them in the "Classic" environment, which runs OS 9.2. The Classic environment is slightly slow to load, but it is nice not to have to restart to run some of the older programs.
The biggest problem I have found with OS X is that not all peripherals are supported yet. I have an older Epson printer and Microtek scanner and they haven't upgraded the drivers yet. If I want to print or scan, I have to run OS 9.2 to do it. This will get better with time.
I didn't discuss iTunes, iMovie, CD burning, or some of the other multimedia capabilities of this system. These are some of the biggest advantages of 10.1, but my experience with many of them is limited.
If you are a Mac enthusiast, like I am, you NEED to run Mac OS 10.1.
