Once again, it seems that Microsoft has pulled a big one on the public... this time with their new operating system, Windows ME.
I obtained a copy of Windows ME the first week it came out and, although wary about it, decided to intall it over Windows 98SE.
At first, this new version seemed promising as things seemed to run a little smoother, a little quicker, and was more user friendly.
However, I was wrong and the nightmare began only two days after I installed it.
The first problem I faced was shutting down: About 99% of the time I went to shut down my computer, I got a "Windows Protection Error". I had this problem in Windows 98, but it was easily fixed. In Windows ME, I tried everything such as a BIOS update, updates from the Microsoft site, and even uninstalling a few devices that may be causing this... none of these worked. I was stuck with this blue screen every time I shut down until I got rid of this joke of an operating system.
Secondly, the way Microsoft tries to integrate everything into their software was quite annoying. I indicated NOT to install MSN messenger on the installation, but it decided that I had to have it anyway. It did not end there, though. Since MSN messenger was installed, every time I logged on to Hotmail, it tried to sign on to MSN messenger. Not only did this eat up some system resources, but Internet Explorer would crash half the time it ran MSN messenger.
The new Windows Media Player 7.0 which comes with Windows ME, is just a bad program covered up with a fancy user interface. I can not count how many times this thing crashed when trying to play video clips off the internet.
I finally decided that it was time for this thing to go. Microsoft had to have their last laugh though when I discovered that I could not uninstall Windows ME. I specifically chose to save my Windows 98 files, but for some reason, the uninstallation was unavailable. I had to reformat my hard drive.
Overall, this operating system is bad. I would not recommend this to ANYONE. The pros of this software are so minute that they are not worth mentioning. People who must have the most up to date software, I am warning you: STICK WITH WINDOWS 98. If you install Windows ME and decide later that you do not want it, you may have to reformat.
