One-Write = Too Many Wrongs... Peachtree Software, Inc. One-Write Plus
Written: May 08 '00 (Updated Sep 18 '01)
Pros:Cheap.
Cons:Inaccurate Results.
The Bottom Line: Avoid use of this software product. Updating this product can be a nightmare!
I have been working with One-Write Plus Accounting Software for the past year and a half. My employer had recently purchased this prior to my first day on the job. Our accountant had accomplished the task of entering all of the data from the older DOS version to this newer Y2K Compliant software.
The program is simple to use. It contains all necessary accounting information for tax purposes. For the most part all I should have to do is print up tax reports to copy off of for my monthly, quarterly and year end tax filings.
The software comes with a very easy to read manual as does each update that you purchase. Yearly you need to purchase a One-Write Plus software update and a separate payroll tax update. Combined the two cost more than the original software package.
We have discovered several problems with this software that concerns me greatly. I have discovered reports do not print correctly. In accounting it is crucial to have accurate information.
On several occasions when I print up the salesman commission report to we discover an invoice or two is showing on the wrong persons commission report. What is wrong about this happening is...
I do not enter the salesmen's individual codes with each invoice. It is programmed to post to the correct salesperson automatically. It is time consuming and annoying to correct this problem. I do try as a habit to check as I post that it is going to the correct category but in all truthfulness I should not have to. That is what the program is designed for.
Another problem I have is that when printing reports columns of information do not process correctly. I have huge blank spaces where there should be columns of numbers. This is a common problem with the Sales Commission Reports.
One feature that my employer had looked forward to enjoying the ease of using was the Paybills Report. It does not show correct due dates in conjunction with discounts available. This drives my employer to distraction. Last week we spent an hour and half going over how this report is supposed to function and how is does function. Our accountant gave up. She suggested we try running a different type of report. I offered to highlight the discounts available for his ease.
We have also discovered other interesting errors. On occasion my personal State Income Tax Withheld (I am the only one who withholds state income tax) will show up in the General Ledger under Copy Machines. Again, this is not something I enter. The Payroll program is set up. On occasion it does not function correctly.
Technical Support is a good issue to discuss at this point. My employer chose not to have a service contract. After all, once loaded and running it should not have any problems right? After our initial thirty days I was on my own.
Y2K compliant? Yes, it was. However I will share my yearly update gripe. When I updated the accounting program and tax updates for 1999 I had no problem. When it was time for Y2K updates the story was a little bit different...
We received the discs in the mail for the updates for the One Write Plus Software and Income Taxes during the second or third week of January, 2000. Loading software is an easy process, correct? Not with One Write Plus. Included in the box with the floppy discs where step by stop instructions. They didn't work. So I pulled out the new mini manual and looked at the instructions in there. They were different. "Hmmmm, interesting I thought....." Back to the computer I went and tried this set of instructions. No go. My screen was frozen - I was stuck.
I phoned Peach Tree Software and after speaking to three people and explaining there was No way I would pay for a tech support phone call, Not for a brand new software update that cost over $90.00 that I could not install. I was finally directed to someone in some department - software design I believe? The man chuckled and said "Ok, here's what you do." In less than thirty seconds on my third set of instructions the update loaded. I asked him why there were two different sets of instructions included in the box - he had no answer. I asked him why the instructions he gave me where not included. He had no answer. Hmmmm, makes me wonder if Peach Tree isn't looking for some Tech Support calls to support the company???
In closing I would strongly not recommend use of this software. Personally I use Microsoft Money Programs and they far exceed what this software offers. I would love to have Microsoft Business Accounting Program...
