interpreter's Full Review: Microsoft FrontPage 2002 Full Version for PC (392-...
For all those who desire to post a web site on the internet, this is the software to first tackle before moving up to more sophisticated programs.
After three years with FrontPage 2002, I advanced to the next level of web design - Macromedia web design software. Believe me when I say learning to handle Dreamweaver. Flash, and Fireworks MX2004 is a challenge.
Yet is was a challenge I was able to handle given my experience with FrontPage.
Even though FrontPage 2002 lacked some of the features of its earlier forerunner, 2000, namely Image Composer, one could still post a stylish web site with relative ease. This software's stength is its user friendliness.
Of course, one is unable to create the eye-popping visual graphic quality as in Macromedia's Fireworks, but the quality FrontPage supplies is still professional. And best of all it's a lot easier to handle.
With menu picks as WordArt, DHTML (Dynamic HyperText Markup Langauge), and hyperlinks, one could put together a respectable web site with some practice and know how.
Before trying FrontPage, I took the cautious route and enrolled in a three-day class. After the first day, I was able to post a web site to a web server (GeoCities) that handles FrontPage and its extensions.
This was accomplished without ever taking a computer course in college. Like other softwares, understanding the logical patterns are key. FrontPage's drop down menus are easy to understand. If you want to change the background color of your site, there is a background listing on the menu. With couple of clicks, presto, the color changes.
Another great feature about FrontPage is there are web companies out there on the internet that sell software to enhance FrontPage. I had purchased a software that allowed me to add slideshow photographs and scroll bars all in FrontPage.
I also brought software to allow me to post video clips into FrontPage, but that's a more complicated task given the time it takes for a video to download onto someone's computer. Yet for a simple but neat looking web design, FrontPage by itself is up to the task.
To insert a still photograph requires a minimum of knowledge as long as you know where you stored your photograph on your computer's hard drive. Once again, a knowledge of the drop down features on the menu bar is all one needs to design a web page.
Since I had learned FrontPage in a classroom setting, I could only venture a guess how tough to handle it would be for someone with no computer training. Someone who understands the basic of computer logic, I'm sure would have no sweat in handling FrontPage without training.
One drawback, however, is there is no simple computer book to delve into to learn. I brought one after taking the class but it was only a little help giving the stuffy jargon. I know the computer book writers try to dummy down the computer terms, but still there is only so much one could dummy down without fully explaining computer functions.
If, however, one has a strong desire to publish a web site, FrontPage is the answer for someone with only some computer experience. Compared to Macromedia, FrontPage is a stroll in the park. Of course, the results differ, but one has to start somewhere to reach one's desired goal of publishing a respectable web site. FrontPage offers a road map to that goal.
To say the least, FrontPage is not the best web designing software on the market. Yet it's the best web designing software for beginners who hope one day to advance to better and more complicated web designs.
