I have a cable modem, and my computer is on 90% of the day. The first day I had this software installed I received 20 attacks against my system. All of these attacks were thwarted by BlackICE Defender. Everything from a PCAnywhere Ping to a BackOrifice Scan.
Not only does it keep unwanted people from your computer, it does a reverse DNS lookup and tells you who just tried to hack into your computer. Add to this the fact that NetworkICE offers a DNS /WHOIS lookup, you get a very powerful means to combat would be hackers.
I have two very minor gripes about this package.
**************06/26/00***************************
Gripe 1 is no longer valid!!
BlackIce now allows you to block specific addresses for a day, a week, a month, or forever. To do this you go to the "Intruders" tab and right click on the intruder you wish to ban. This will bring up a menu, select block and then the length of time you wish them to be blocked for.
**************06/26/00***************************
Gripe 1: I want to be able to select an address and state that it is blocked forever, regardless of the current security setting. Currently this is set by Defender when you get a predetermined number of attacks from the same computer.
Gripe 2: When you are on IRC chat you have to add the users to your "trusted address" list to receive files from them. This is a very minor annoyance, but it sure beats dropping your proverbial pants and saying "come get me!"
All in all I think this is a great product.
