| zzzzzzzzz's Full Review: Macmillan BlackICE Defender Full Version for PC (1... |
I've been testing security systems for a while now. I got a cable modem installed at home about 3 years ago, and I knew I needed some kind of protection.
I've tried ZoneAlarm, Norton Personal Firewall, and even McAffee's Firewall. All of them created more trouble than they were worth. While Zone was good at blocking, it was also good at blocking EVERYTHING, including outbound traffic.
I like BlackICE's hybrid of an IDS and firewall. Since I already have a good virus scanner, I like that it doesn't block any outbound traffic - only people hacking into my system.
In the first hour I had this thing on-line it nabbed 10 hackers. That was 10 more than Zone or Norton discovered. I also like that it tells me about ALL network events, even when my ISP scans me.
BlackICE also has some of the best documentation of any network security product I've ever seen. When I first was learning about these products, I found the BlackICE documents to be extremely informative.
The only thing I don't like about BlackICE is the UI. its a little crude and dated. I wish they had a better reporting engine so I could analyze the intrusions better. However, I just installed this ClearICE add-in program that promises more comprehensive reporting features.
The other thing I like is that BlackICE uses protocol analysis as the core technology. As I dove into networking and studied all the technologies, I've come to learn that this is a considerably more effective way to detect hackers.
However, make sure you download the latest upgrade from Network ICE. They have patched a few new holes lately.
All in all - BlackICE is the hands down winner
