Norton Antivirus 2000 was an excellent product with one minor problem, it didn't work very well with the new Windows Millenium edition operating system. Recently Symantec released Norton Antivirus 2001, which has all the updates and virus definitions since January 2000 when it's predecessor was released as well as being completely redesigned to work with Windows ME. The new release will work with all Windows formats.
Installation
Installation is simple, just insert the CD and follow the directions. After the installation is complete, you will be prompted to reboot the computer for the settings to take effect. During installation you will have the option of setting up email protection and weekly scans of the computers hard drives. You will also have the option on running the "Live Update" feature after completion of the installation. Files needed to create a set of emergency boot disks will be copied to the hard drive during installation and I recommend creating the set as soon as you reboot. The registration of the software is also done during the installation to make it easy. If you have an internet connection you can register before you reboot.
My Personal Experience
Norton Antivirus 2001 was released in early October of this year and we have been using it at our tech bench since it's release. To date we have cleaned 16 computers without having to restore the original software and only 2 that did have to be restored. The computers that are being sold in retail stores mostly do not come with an Antivirus program. The more costly and high performance computers usually do but they generally have Norton Antivirus 2000 or McCaffee Virus Shield installed, both of which do not work very well with Windows Millenium. Although McCaffee does have a downloadable patch to correct this on their web site, I recommend Norton 2001.
I have been using Norton Antivirus 2001 on my own computers since the end of October this year and have had no problems with it. I have several computers at home and various operating systems. I use the program on all my Windows based computers from Windows NT 4.0 server to Windows Millenium and all of them work fine with it.
Live Update
The live update feature allows you to connect directly to the Symantec server via the Internet to download all the latest virus definitions and any software updates that become available. I recommend using this feature at least once a month in case a new virus is released in that time. There is no limit to how many times you can use the Live Update feature so using it frequently is a good idea.
You can set up Live Update to connect on it's own on a regular basis so you don't even have to be home for it to run. This is a nice feature for people who travel a lot or just don't have time to keep up with the virus creators. You can set it to run at night while you sleep.
I recommend Norton Antivirus 2001 to all PC users running Windows operating systems. In my personal opinion, I think it is the best Antivirus software available for ease of use and price. Once it is set up, you can just let it do it's thing and be done with it.
