WHY I USE A ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM:
I have used a PC for more than 10 years without ever getting a virus. This created a false since of security that resulted in me rarely running a virus detection program. After putting my wife’s small business on the net she got interested in going on line. I made the mistake of letting her sign up with AOL. Eight months later I got my first Trojan from AOL. By now, she felt more comfortable on the computer and after getting no help from AOL and a long list of other reasons, I was able to convince her to drop AOL. I then had to reformat the hard disk to get rid of the Trojan. After a few more years of never having a virus problem, I reverted back to “the odds of my getting a virus are not worth the cost of a virus program.”
Then it happened, we were getting about 300 emails a day by that time and one of the virus’s that made the news was attached to a email we received. Fortunately I was able to get rid of it without having to reformat the disk. As quickly as I could, I went out and got Norton’s antivirus program. Three days later it detected and stopped another virus. In the last year it has stopped probably four viruses or Trojans. Now, I am convinced that you need a antivirus program to protect yourself from other people that do not have such a program.
WINDOWS ME:
I updated my OS to Windows ME and decided to update my antivirus program at the same time. Norton’s released the program at the same time and offered a rebate, too.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
Windows 95 OSR2 and Windows 98, Intel 80486DX/66 processor, 32MB RAM, 50MB of hard disk space and a CD-ROM disk.
Windows ME, Intel Pentium 150MHZ processor, 32MB RAM, 50MB of hard disk space and a CD-ROM disk.
Windows NT 4.0 Workstation, Service Pack 4, Intel Pentium processor, 16MB RAM (32MB recommended), 50MB of hard disk space and a CD-ROM disk.
Windows 2000 Professional, Intel Pentium 133MHZ processor, 64MB RAM, 50MB of hard disk space and a CD-ROM disk.
The above are the minimum requirements and of course other processors besides Intel can be used. While not required, an Iomega Zip drive is a definite advantage when making a Rescue Disk set.
NOTE: Norton AntiVirus does not support Iomega Zip or Jaz drives with a USB interface because there are no DOS drivers available.
EMAIL PROGRAMS:
Norton AntiVirus automatically configures the following email clients for email protection: MS Outlook Express 4.0/5.x, MS Outlook 97/98/2000, Netscape Messenger 4.x, Eudora Light 3.0, Eudora Pro 4.0, Pegasus Mail 3.0, Becky! Internet Mail 1.26, and Al-Mail 1.11.
Norton AntiVirus can protect other POP3 clients, but you must manually configure the client for protection.
INSTALLATION:
Installation was fast and easy. The preselected options in Setup are the correct choices for most people. During installation it will scan your system to make sure it is virus free. If it finds a problem, you can make an emergency disk from the CD to help you recover. The emergency disks are 1.44 MB disks. You can use the CD that contains Norton AntiVirus as an Emergency Disk if your computer can start up from the CD-ROM drive.
AUTOMATIC LIVEUPDATE:
I did not use this feature with the previous version because I didn’t like the way it ran on my system. Automatic LiveUpdate checks for new virus definitions when you are connected to the Internet. It can update your virus protection without interrupting your work. So far, with this version, it seems to work as advertised and I haven’t had a problem. Also, it will use up your resources so I would suggest making sure you have enough memory. Any problems, you can always switch to manual updates. Norton AntiVirus relies on up-to-date information to detect and eliminate viruses. I suggest you update your virus protection at least once a week.
WHAT’S NEW:
Automatic LiveUpdate (discussed above)
SmartScan: supposed to improve file scanning performance and reduces system impact from constant background monitoring for viruses. I have to assume it works.
Comprehensive email scanning protection: scans email automatically as it is received from the server and detects viruses in email attachments before you can even save or launch the attachment, eliminating the risk of unknowingly forwarding viruses to third parties. This is what I meant by protecting yourself from people who do not have a antivirus program.
New email status window: makes it easy to configure email antivirus protection.
Bootable CD: lets you easily recover from virus emergencies.
I haven’t received a virus since installation so I can’t talk about the alert notices. It should be the same as previous versions, which means they are easily understood and gives you information on what to do if you receive an alert.
This program has never interfered with my downloads or installations of other programs.
This is a must have program.
