OK, firstly, you should know that NA won't always automatically remove viruses from your system. "What good is that!?" I hear you say. Well, let me clarify. NA can (and will) remove viruses from your system but sometimes you will be called upon to do it manually. (Don't worry, Symantec - the owners of NA - will show you how on their website).
See, upon detecting a virus, NA will attempt automatic removal and, if that fails, it will quarantine the offending critter, allowing you to continue to use your system safely. However, this is where NA is a little unclear.
If automatic removal fails, the virus sits in quarantine waiting for you to (a) delete it (which may not stop the virus reappearing) or (b) visit the Symantec website, locate the removal instructions for your virus and remove it manually - and permanently. My only gripe with NA is that the role of the Symantec website is not made obvious - well, it maybe but I don't like reading those boring instruction manuals ;-) - and, besides, it should be made clearer throughout the application itself.
However, when you do visit the Symantec website you will find excellent step-by-step and fully comprehensive removal instructions which makes manual removal a cinch.
Other good features include: free and frequent live virus definition updates over the Internet (for a year); autoprotection (constant, system-resource-efficient background monitoring); automatic scanning of email, attachments and downloads to ensure they are virus free; protection against Trojan horses and Java/ActiveX-based viruses. Finally, you can always submit new viruses to Symantec's research centre.
All in all, NA has brought me peace of mind. Just expect to do some manual work sometimes - but hey, that never hurt anybody.
Remember to practice safe computing!
