Pros: Live Update Of Virus Info, Intense Scanning Of Files.
Cons: Bugs Cause Live Update to Fail.
The Bottom Line: I recommend Norton AntiVirus to those running windows 2000, or looking for easy updates. Mcafee offers better support, and more frequent updates. Its basically a Tie.

Ive been using virus scanners for quiet a few years, Ive used everything from AVP to Thunderbyte, Mcafee and Norton.
Ive even tried out some no name programs.
After using them all, Mcafee and Norton are the top picks, and they are really the only ones you hear about often.
Ive got the latest of both McAfee and Norton Antivirus and both work well..
Mcafee seems to be very tempermental and fails to load correctly if you dont let it load on startup. If you close it completely and then attempt to reopen it, it generates a program error.
Norton works just about as well.. it has no loading issues other than a problem related to windows 2000 somewhere. Sometimes the live update fails to run, and leaves the program unusable. I went to Nortons site, they had a bug fix, and after reinstalling Norton, and patching it, the live update worked again.
Both software offer options of when and when not to scan files (on creation, on open, on close, on download, ect..) They both offer protection on opening emails, and even on java and applets in webbrowsers and word documents. They 2 virus scanners are so alike because they both implement features the other company thinks of, its a constant race between versions to build the better scanner and as a result both offer a good array of protection for the over all computer system.
One place McAfee has my applause is the customer support, which I have used, called in, reported a virus that was unknown, and they looked at it, contacted me back, told me they would work on a fix and gave me links to stay updated on the situation, and download daily upgrades. Not only did they have open updates, phone in support, but they had online techs to help with 1 on 1 java chat. Something I hadnt seen before.
Norton, simply said they dont respond to reports of viruses,
that I could just download the next version of the software. That was a little useless in my opinion.
So over all Mcafee has Norton beat out as far as relations with customers, support and frequent updates. But they have issues even in software they claim is compatible with Windows 2000.
Norton fixes thier software bugs, and they are compatible with Windows 2000, but they need far more support.
I would recommend giving both a try and seeing how they run on your system. With 2 products so alike, moving so fast with updates, theres no way to recommend one or the other without running them on your system first. They run differently on every computer.
