AntiVirus software is a must-have for all computers because a single virus can wreak your computer left to right. A good AntiVirus software is just as essential. Norton AntiVirus is one such good AntiVirus program; McAfee is another. At this time, I have Norton AntiVirus 2001 installed on my computer.
Norton AntiVirus 2001 (NAV2001) checks your computer for up to 59064+ viruses. Since new viruses are discovered daily, from time to time NAV2001 prods you to download the latest virus definitions. This can be done using LiveUpdate or, if you can't configure LiveUpdate with your internet connection, the definitions can be downloaded directly from the NAV website at www.norton.com. NAV2001 alerts you when your virus definitions are out of date, so that you don't forget to update them. This alert can be turned off if so desired.
If NAV2001 detects a virus that cannot be eliminated with the available set of virus definitions, you can choose to put it into quarantine. Quarantined files can not interact with the rest of your files, so if the suspected file is indeed infected, the virus will not spread. If you think a file contains an unknown virus, it can be sent to the Symantec AntiVirus Research Center (SARC) for analysis. SARC will report the results back to you, whether the file is infected or not, and with updated virus definitions if it is. You're never at a loss.
With NAV2001, you can either scan everything in your computer, all removable drives, a floppy disk, specific drives, specific folders or individual files. Custom scans that check only specific files and folders can also be created using ScanWizard. Custom scans can be saved to be repeated later.
Scans can be scheduled to be performed at certain times. For example, if you want a full system scan to run automatically every Monday morning, it can be done. You can also schedule another program to run, a message to be displayed, and LiveUpdates. Norton AntiVirus recommends that you run a scan at least once a week.
The time it takes to perform a full scan varies, depending on how many files your computer has. Just as an example, it took 19 minutes 27 seconds to scan the 58,596 files, 1 master boot record and 3 boot records that exist in my computer.
When an infected file is found, NAV2001 either tries to repair it (removes the virus and saves the file) or denies access, deletes or quarantines it. The default action is to try and repair the file, and this option is recommended. A custom response can also be set.
Norton AntiVirus 2001 is not as complicated as I expected it to be, for I had the corporate edition installed before this and I didn't like it one bit. On the contrary, NAV2001 guided me through the whole scanning process and I didn't have to do much. The only problem I had was with LiveUpdate, which would never update all the files properly. It would always give me an error of some sort, saying that it was unable to download the updates. To remedy this, I had to download each product update file separately.
Norton AntiVirus is always scanning files in the background, as soon as they are run, opened, created or downloaded. My computer and I feel quite safe now that we have Norton Antivirus 2001.
