I might not be the best person to write a review of HomeSite. I'm anal, what can I say? I take pride in the fact that I handcode all my websites. I tell everyone. What they don't know is that I am partly lying to them. I don't really handcode everything. Homesite's wizards are there to help me along. Homesite is colorcoding the code for me so I know what I'm looking at, at all times.
Homesite is like that little midget helper you hide under your desk. Or, maybe not. Either way, Allaire delivers a wonderful webpage creation tool that should replace Dreamweaver as the "Industry Standard." HomeSite is such a great tool in so many ways for the knowledgable webdesigner. It's not made to help you position tables and make everything look pretty immediately, without any intelligence on your part. It's made to work with what you know and make everything a lot faster.
It doesn't create the page for you, it streamlines the process for you. You can easily throw together some great, clean, table code in about three seconds. Those image width-heights? Don't bother finding those on your own anymore. Need to preview your page in the browser? Just click on a single tab and you have a wonderful preview in IE. Simple!
The only problem with all these features is that I will never use them. While I love the product, I probably use only 15% of the entire thing. There are so many features I will, sadly, never use, it makes me wonder why Allaire doesn't release a HomeSite Lite for those of us who don't need such a large array of features at our fingertips.
This feel of bloat leaks down into the entire program. It takes up a needless amount of system resources. Running down your system just like Photoshop does. It's kind of odd. Also, the bloat makes the program buggy. It's prone to crashes, in the most unwanted situations, and takes delight in erasing your temporary files it generates. 4.0 didn't erase the hs~name.html files when it crashed, but 4.5 does. Oh well. All good things must come to an end.
Anyway, if you've been using Notepad for years, you really should make the switch to HomeSite if you have the system for it. It's a wonderful program that really does make webpage creation more of a joy, than a chore.
