Pros: Size, Weight, Cheap Ammo, Real Feel. Lots of Fun
Cons: Internal Magazine
The Colt Defender CO2 BB Pistol is probably one of the best values on the market today for pistol shooters; and in particular for shooters of the .45 ACP model Colt Defender. At the current price of around $50.00 or less this pistol gives you a high quality working replica of the real thing. It’s made under license by UMAREX USA, which is the US Branch of UMAREX INC parent company af Walther firearms in Germany.
The German reputation for quality is immediately apparent when you first handle this Air Pistol; it is the same size and weight and matches the Colt Defender in every dimension. Its metal construction is true to the original in every way I can see with the exception of working slide, hammer, and magazine, which are fixed in the case of all three.
The Colt Defender CO2 Air Pistol is advertised as follows
An all-metal, easy-to-operate scale model of Colt's popular compact semiautomatic pistol that uses compressed air to shoot BBs up to 440 fps. It looks and feels just like the full-power model, complete with a spring-powered grip release, fixed sights and a weight of 1.6 lbs. The grip houses a compartment for a standard CO2 cylinder. The magazine holds 16 BBs.
The weapon uses Steel BB’s for ammo the internal magazine holds 16 rounds, and shoots with an advertised velocity of 410 fps. It uses a 12 gram CO2 Cartridge mounted internally in the grip and my experience is you’ll get from 5-9 magazines (80-146 BB’s) worth of shooting, per cartridge depending on the air temp and how often you rapid fire the gun. When you do run low on CO2 the drop in power is immediately apparent.
I do not have a Chrony tester so I can’t verify the velocity but I can say that the BB’s regularly penetrate soda cans, glass bottles, plastic coffee cans full of sand and make a heck of a dent in old pots and pans I use for targets on my backyard range.
The manual the comes with the pistol is printed in English, French, and Spanish. and is 13 pages in each language. It is a must read (even for us guys) before you put the weapon into operation. Please follow the safety instructions included, and a personal plea from me to secure your children and pets, before using the weapon and make sure all personnel on your range have ballistic eye protection, and I would recommend long pants and long sleeve shirt as well. Heavier material the better. I live alone so I don’t have much in the way of people or pets to worry about but when the wild ducks that use our lagoon are in the yard I close the range for them.
This replica air pistol is a hoot to shoot. It is fairly accurate at distances under 15 yards. I can regularly shoot a 3-5 inch group at 15 yards. Much closer when I practice my draw technique at closer ranges. Which brings me to the biggest value of this weapon. If you are licensed to carry concealed weapons this is a great tool. The cost savings in Ammo is huge!
The size and weight mean you can use your normal holster and practice your draw technique at home, you can review your ‘Unlock’ codes of putting a weapon in operation at every step, and you can follow through to point of engagement over and over and over again for the cost of one magazine of 45 ACP you can shoot this weapon 500 times or so.
I believe if you carry concealed you have an obligation to yourself, your license, and the public at large to be proficient in all aspects of your weapons operation. Time on the range is valuable, ammo is valuable, and this Air Pistol does not in my view replace it completely. But it does serve to mitigate the costs, and improve your technique and therein lies the highest value for this product.
Bottom line here is this is a fun weapon, that works as advertised; it’s an adult toy. But also a great practice and training aid for new and old shooters alike. I would recommend this to friends, family and any responsible adult.
