Silver Plated Spring Rings
Written: Mar 27 '13
Pros:Very pretty when new, easy to work with, nice size
Cons:The silver plating tarnishes
The Bottom Line: Well made, easy to use, but they will tarnish
Silver Elegance and Gold Elegance are brands of jewelry findings that I purchase regularly, and I generally buy them at Michael's Crafts. They are higher end products with a bigger price tag, so I wait until I have some 40% off coupons before I buy.
I've used these silver plated spring rings for making bracelets and necklaces, and they do an okay job. They come packaged in a tiny plastic cubicle that is attached to a hanging card, and there are 8 pieces in the package, which is enough to make 8 pieces of jewelry. Of course you also need some jump rings for the spring rings to connect to.
Unless I use Argentium silver jewelry findings, silver will tarnish. These spring rings, although they are beautiful and shiny in the package, will tarnish in time. My jewelry case is lined with a special material that resists tarnishing, but if I hang my jewelry on a jewelry display where it is exposed to the air, it will tarnish.
These spring rings are easy to use. There is a small loop at one end where you can attach them to jewelry wire, securing it with a crimp bead and covering the crimp bead with a special hollow bead.
The springs on the Cousin Silver Elegance Spring Rings are well made. I purchased some cheaper ones on eBay and many of the springs broke - meaning I had to un-string all of my beads and re-string them. When making jewelry it's worth it to spend more money and buy a higher end product so that your items last.
I would qualify these spring rings as a higher end, quality product. They look like true sterling silver when new, but they will tarnish. The 8mm size is a nice size and are almost as easy to open and close as a Lobster clasp would be. The package of 8 spring rings normally retails for around $4.00.
