Living With A Coffee Snob: The Cuisinart DCG20 12 Cup Coffee Grinder

Rated a Very Helpful Review

Pros:Easy to use, retractable cord, inexpensive, you pick the grind.

Cons:Loud, hard to clean, loud.

The Bottom Line: While I don't have the patience to grind my own beans every day, coffee snobs will appreciate the simplicity of this grinder.

When I want coffee I want it in a relatively short period of time; waiting for it to brew is tedious enough let alone having to grind the beans and clean up after it. I am not a coffee snob, I will drink just about anything but when I want coffee I want it in a reasonable amount of time. Mike is a coffee snob. If left to his own devices it would take him a half hour to brew a half pot of coffee. He likes to grind his own beans, warm the milk or cream, add espresso shots to it and other assorted Starbucks-like coffee tricks. Don't ever stretch after a meal and say, "You know, a cappuccino would really hit the spot right now" because he will spring in to action.

He had two coffee bean grinders; one sounded like a jet taking off when it would start the grind cycle and it had a ton of dials on it to adjust the grind time and desired fineness / thickness of the coffee. Thankfully that one did not make the trip across the pond; the smaller more user friendly Cuisinart DCG-20 [henceforth called the Cuisinart grinder] ended up on my counter and gets used about four or five days a week. While I will admit that there is a definite taste difference between fresh ground beans and coffee grinds in a can I am too lazy to go through the extra steps needed. To make things worse, a fifth of the freezer in the kitchen was taken over by 'his' coffee beans to ensure the best taste possible.

I've used this a couple times with no problems; it is easy to measure out how much you are adding and it has a one touch operation button on the top. It is larger than other grinders I have owned in the past but most of those were mostly used for spices instead of coffee beans. This has a two and a half ounce cut off limit so you can get about ten strong cups of coffee from each blend. He usually only makes three or four cups at a time; enough to fill his thermos and about a cup left over to have before he leaves. The downside is that the center cup is not removable, nor are the blades. You have to wipe out the center section of it to clean it. If you are only using it for coffee beans then you aren't going to have to spend a lot of time cleaning it out but if you are using it to grind other things you are going to want to spend the time cleaning it out.

Mike said he paid about twenty dollars for the grinder; that seems about average for something with this kind of grind capacity. It is a well made unit that will not operate unless the plastic lid is replaced on the top of it but I wouldn't leave this out on the counter if you have younger kids because you never know what they are going to try to stick in it. Outside of not being able to take it apart to give it a thorough cleaning about the only con to this Cuisinart grinder is that it is a little on the loud side. He never uses it for more than about a minute at a time so it isn't a big deal but when he is going a whole bag of beans to put in the freezer or give to someone it can really work your last nerve. I like that there isn't a timer on it; that allows you to grind the beans to whatever grit you like rather than having to go with standard measures.
