Freak369's Full Review: d_Skin Protective Disc Skins (00511) (5 Pack)
From time to time we give out gifts at the shop to say thanks to our regular customers. We went through the gift card routine and found that, well, most of the people never used them or werent sure how to use them. After having a great experience with a borrowed DVD from our public library that had a d_Skin Protective Disc Skin on it and purchasing the twenty pack for use on my music CDs and video games I thought that these would be an awesome thing to give away. I love my customers but theres no way possible that I would be able to fork out $900.00 to purchase 50 packs of them. I decided to buy all of the 5 count packages that they had at Wal-Mart to hand them out to some of the regulars to see if they liked them. The clerk at the store gave me a rather strange look, peered over my shoulder to the larger twenty pack and said, You know, you can save some money buying those instead of these. Thats when I had to go into the speech about how they are gifts for the customers .. long story short, he asked for my card, called, booked an appointment and came in and got some ink of his own.
d_Skin Protective Disc Skins5 Pack
I already went over the specifics of this product when I reviewed the twenty pack but in case you missed it - here it goes. The d_Skin is an innovative item that covers the readable surface of your disc. It protects it from dust, dirt, fingerprints and scratches. The beauty of it is that it doesnt have to be removed when you are done with it and can be left on for an indefinite period of time. These skins can be used on any type of disc from CD-Rs to data storage, video games to DVDs. The laser reads the disc through the skin so there is never a need to remove it unless it becomes damaged; if that is the case just remove the skin and put a new one on. This is the kind of product that you see on the shelf and slap your forehead and say, Why didnt I think of that?. If you have kids that are rough on DVDs or CDs then this is definitely something to invest in. Thats not to say that these wont rip or get damaged but they will save a lot of wear and tear on the discs themselves. If you do have a skin that rips or gets damaged it is easy to remove them and place another one on the disc.
You can use these on every type of disc - video games, DVDs, CR-Rs, picture discs and general data storage. The five pack comes in a nice metal tin and everyone that got one at the shop really liked them. We had to show a couple of people how to use them but for the most part, everyone was pretty thrilled to get one of these. The five pack isnt as cost effective as the twenty pack so if you are planning on protecting a lot of discs, you might want to look for the twenty pack or check the d_Skin website to see if they started selling these in larger quantities. I really have to stress this - there is no need to remove the skin once you have applied it. The only time you may want to remove it is if it shows any signs of wear or it doesnt initially play on your equipment. You will want to make sure that you clean the disc completely before you apply the skin but if you miss a spot or get a strand of hair under it, just pop it off, clean it and reapply the skin. If you take the skin off a couple of times there is a chance that it will get stretched out but if you put it on once - it will stay there until you remove it.
Directions
To start with, make sure your disc is clean and free of any fingerprints, dust, dirt or lint. I suggest using a high quality disc cleaner and if there are small scratches checking into purchasing a CD scratch repair kit. Once you have cleaned the disc simply take one of the skins, press it around the edge of the disc and pop it into place. You will know right away if you have it seated correctly but it never hurts to feel the edges with your finger to make sure the edges are all laying flat. If you have any trouble playing a disc after you apply the skin double check the edges and hold it on an angle to see if anything managed to get on the disc before you applied the skin. d_Skin doesnt give a set amount of time that the skins will last; that all depends on how gently you handle them as well as how much use them get. These arent indestructible but they will help to keep a lot of things from coming in contact with the surface of the disc.
Price
The five pack costs about $6.99 to $8.99 depending on where you shop. I got these at Wal-Mart for $6.49 and $7.49. For some reason the first time I purchased them they were one price then when I went back they were another price. For another ten dollars you can get the twenty pack and get an extra 15 skins. It all depends on how many discs you have to cover or if you want to get the five pack to try them out to see if you like them. This is a nice stocking stuffer and its never too early to start shopping for Christmas! The five pack is nice if you want to get someone turned on to these or only have a couple of discs to protect but as I said, they arent the most cost effective way to go.
The Bottom Line
These are super easy to fit on to any type of CD and they do give you an incredible amount of protection from dust, fingerprints, dirt, lint, hair, scratches and whatever else manages to get on your discs. The real beauty of these is that they can be used on any type of disc and they dont have to be removed when you are done using them. Consider these a must have for anyone that transports discs to and from work, hits the occasional cyber cafe or swaps video games with other people. If you are sick and tired of having to wipe fingerprints off of your DVDs after the kids have handled them or when someone returns a movie to you then sink a couple of bucks into the d_Skin Protective Disc Skins. Theyll extend the life of your movies, video games and music and they are something that I plan on getting everyone for the holidays this year.
