Pros:Excellent scuplt; very easy to use in a game; fun factor is awesome
Cons:People will cry foul over no flight and range; harder to find
The Bottom Line: Rookie Superman isn't the most powerful version of the Man of Steel but he certainly shows his durability. This is a rough and tough version that is fun to use.
One of the most iconic images of Superman comes from the cover of Superman #14 published back in 1942. It depicts than Man of Steel with a bald eagle on his arm standing in front of the American Flag in shield form. Now WizKids/NECA recreates this image for its DC HeroClix: DC 75th Anniversary collection.

Rookie Superman features the Golden Age version of the Man of Steel, the one first introduced back in 1938. Well, technically his outfit has changed since his very first inception but this is still the Superman from the World War II era. That also means he is outfitted with the Justice Society team affiliation on his dial, something that will really help his cause and those sharing the same team name as the highest defense value is shared among them.
His Speed dial is an important one that needs attention for this is a Superman who cannot fly. However he can still Leap Tall Buildings, one of the Special Powers granted to him. Even though he is only eight clicks deep (out of twelve), he manages to keep things simple with his abilities. This is not a hard figure to use at all and quite refreshing. The first four clicks of Charge shows he's not afraid to meet challenges while the remaining clicks help him defensively with Force Blast under his belt. The best way to describe the latter ability is using his super breath to blow opponents away.
***Leap Tall Buildings (Special Powers): Superman can use leap climb. When he uses leap climb, if he starts his movement on elevated terrain and ends on grounded terrain, he can then make a close combat attack as a free action.
His Attack slot has an impressive +11 attack value to start things off for one click. It then drops to +10 for the next four accompanied with Super Strength. It would be a rare thing for Superman not to have this ability at his disposal.
I'm impressed with his Defense slot with 17-defense and the Indomitable ability allowing him the access the use Willpower throughout the dial. He carries this numerical value for the first five clicks before he drops to 16-defense. This is an amazing feat and one that holds a lot of advantages. It also helps that he is supplied with Toughness throughout this dial. While it's not quite up to par with Invulnerability or even Impervious, it does indicate that bullets still bounce off the man.
His damage output is really good as well. His Damage slot shows a varying degree of base-3 hits with one base-4 popping up on the second click. The first four clicks also allow Superman to use Heroic Inspiration, another one of his Special Powers. This could be the game breaker for your team. But just when you thought that the Man of Steel would fade near the end, he gains four clicks of Close Combat Expert just to show that he can still deliver a pounding to anyone who dares tussle with him in hand-to-hand combat.
***Heroic Inspiration (Special Powers): Superman may use Leadership. If he rolls a 6, in addition to the regular effects you may remove an action token from him.
I really love how this game piece looks. It has one of those rare qualities where all you want to do is just put it on display. What makes this even more impressive is that it is only 2" in height. The details and paint application really make it a special piece.
Rookie Superman has a lot of fun factor built into this dial. A lot of people are going to say that this isn't the true Superman at all. After all if he can't fly, has no range, and barely any powers, then why bother using him? It depends on your game strategy but do not overlook this piece at all. While it may not be the strongest Superman piece ever, it sure is a fun one to use. Isn't that what the game is all about in the first place> I'm sure Superman will agree to that.
