The New Generation of Demon Slaying, is Dante getting too old?
by Rickie Valentin
Sep 10, 2013
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:A new hero, a new chapter, and more demons to slay!
Cons:Not enough missions to complete. More could have been added.
The Bottom Line: This is my all time most favorite hack and slash video game by far. When demon slaying meets style, you get Devil May Cry, and Dante Sparda!
Let's begin...
DMC Timeline
For the serious game players who have done their research on the Devil May Cry series, it is know that even though this is the fourth installment of the series, in the story line, the events of DMC 4 takes place after the events of DMC 1 but before the events DMC 2. The story line for this 4-game series goes in order starting with DMC 3: Dante's Awakening, followed by DMC 1, then DMC 4, and lastly DMC 2.
A New Beginning
In DMC 4, however, we meet a new, young hero by the name of Nero! Not too much is known about him, where he's from or who he is. We meet our new young hero in the opening credits as he is seen running towards a city, wearing a cast around his left arm, with some melodic singing in the background. We then go to a scene and we're brought to a church setting where we see the source of the lovely singing. A young girl who in a fancy dress is apart of a choir. We then see our new young hero, come across strange new demons, that's never been seen before by new gamers.
Nero quickly disposes of these demons and continues running towards this mysterious city. He eventually makes his arrival to the same church where we see the young lady singing. It soon becomes clear that the two have some sort of relationship or connection with eachother. After Nero is seated, the young lady finishes her song and sits next to him. An old man comes up to the podium to speak and say a few words. He then ends by saying, "let us pray."
We then see our young hero sitting in irritation and boredom due to the lack of interest into the religious event going on. He tells his lady friend that the religious things bores him and he gets up to walk away. As he does so with her, his cast glows blue, and he looks up to the ceiling to see a mysterious man fall through the window celing. Sure enough this man is our popular demon slayer, Dante. However, Dante has this stoic look on his face, and he quickly draws out one of his pistols and shoots the old man in the head, killing him instantly.
The church erupts in chaos and fear as people begin to flee the church. Our momentarily favorite superhero becomes a super vilian, to most gamers at first, thinking, "how am I going to defeat him?" Or so at least that's what I was thinking. Dante stands up with the old man's blood splattered on his face, as the military or law enforcement persons do begin to attack Dante. However, as we all know Dante is quite capable of disposing multiples of enemies with no effort, he proves that once again, in this fight scene. After he kills the last man, he is knocked into Nero's lady friend. She falls to the ground and is approached by Dante, with the same stoic facial expression.
This angers Nero and prompts him to attack our, momentarily of course; former hero. She is quickly rejoined with her brother, one of the military or law enforcement personnel and is taken to safety. Our new hero and our former hero have it out. Nero desperately tries to kill Dante, but fails miserably. Eventually finding out that Dante is a demon, as well as the rest of the personnel he killed, unbeknownst to Nero. To his shock Nero demands to know more about his recent discovery of Dante's existence, how the men he once knew we're truly demons, and possibly how he may be one himself...
That's all...for now!
This fourth game installment to the DMC series was the best game yet! We not only had our favorite hero, but we had a new hero. Each having their own move sets and abilities. We got to meet new bigger and badder demons, along with seeing a couple old sidekicks Dante never forgets about. As well as, some enemies we would have never thought to be an enemy for our two demon slaying heroes.
The Good
This game brought forth some new weapons with a couple new fighting styles, as well as a couple old styles that we may remember from the previous games. The gameplay is still the same as its previous installments (DMC & DMC 3; DMC 2 having its own gameplay) with a couple of positive changes.
The Stylish
And STILL, Capcom manages to maintain the everso loving style of demon slaying that we demon slayers crave when we enter the world that our two heroes work to keep the balance of good and evil.
The Evil
Having a new hero in the story line, I thought there would be an extended gameplay. Meaning, I hoped to have 20-some missions for Dante, and 20-some missions for Nero, to complete. I was sadly mistaken. In this entire game, there were 20 missions in total. Not much of a let down, but enough for a game player like myself to wmore and expect more.
The Bad In addititon to having only 20 missions in total to complete, Dante himself just barely had 7 missions of his own, leaving players in awe. If this game would have had 30 missions, allowing each hero to have 15 missions each, for example, gameplay reception would have been outer space high.
In The End
This game was one of the top selling games of all time between the four game series. Not to mention the graphics for this game are phenomenal. They truly brought DMC from the imagination, onto a platform that we can all enjoy.
My Overall Rating
For this game because I'm a huge DMC and Dante fan, so to speak, I rate this game 5 out of 5 stars.
