For the underdog in all of us.

Pros:Funnier than the trailers made it look.

Cons:Predictable.

The Bottom Line: Screw the trailers. Go dodge some balls.

We all know the old cliche about never judging a book by its cover. Well we are at a point now where we may have to update the axiom to "Never judge a movie by its trailer".

As was proven to me by Dodgeball. From all I could see, the trailers made the Vince Vaughn/Ben Stiller comedy look excruciating. As excruciating as getting nailed in the gonads by one of the titular balls. The trailers were wrong. They managed to hide the movie's hilarious virtues. And Dodgeball does have hilarious virtues.

Dodgeball is a hilarious raspberry to those inspirational sports movies that are the norm in Hollywood. Those ones that show how an underdog team always winds up as a champ. Dodgeball follows the storylines of those films to the letter while tearing them to shreds with the knife of parody. In essence, it's one of the meanest movie parodies out there, yet it's also oddly affectionate in a way.

Vaughn stars as Peter Lefleur, the owner of a small, mom and pop gym called Average Joe's (presumably located in LA). Average Joe's is average in every sense of the word from the fact that physical fitness is most decidedly NOT emphasized there to the fact that Lefleur has not collected membership fees in several months.

Across the street from Average Joe's is Globo Gym, a monolithic Wal-Mart of a gym run by an arrogant schmuck named White Goodman (Stiller). At Globo Gym physical fitness is not only emphasized it's basically mandatory. Globo Gym is cheerfully corporate and it wants to expand. One way it wants to expand is to bulldoze Average Joe's and put up a parking lot. Lefleur and the Average Joe's find out and don't want to realize what they got after it's gone. So to keep the proverbial paradise from getting paved, they have to raise $50,000 to pay off a property tax bill. At first they try resorting to various cliched fundraisers such as car washes. But after a few of those attempts end in disaster, they need to think of something unorthodox. Gordon (Stephen Root) has the answer. They'll play dodgeball and try to get in the Las Vegas International Dodgeball Open. The winner of the Dodgeball Open will win $50,000. So after watching an old black and white instructional video on how to play dodgeball, Lefleur and the Average Joes pick up a coach, Patches O'Houlihan (Rip Torn). Meanwhile, Goodman puts forward his own team to go up against the Average Joes.

As Dodgeball players, the Average Joes are blah. They basically win by dumb luck, first qualifying for the tournament by beating a Girl Scout Team that gets disqualified when one of its members fails the drug test ("She tested positive for Beaver tranquilizer"). Then they go through a series of other dumb coincidences that help keep things going smoothly for them.

So yes, Dodgeball is fairly predictable. That's sort of its point. It's meant to be as predictable as the sports movies it skewers. Yet it’s pointless to complain about it being so, because while Dodgeball may be predictable, it is also funny as hell. It's replete with humor that's largely of the cheap variety (the beaver tranquilizer joke being a prime example). But in this case that's not a problem. A little cheap humor once in a while is not a bad thing, especially if it’s actually funny. Dodgeball is actually funny.

Vaughn and Stiller are both good as are Christine Taylor and Gary Cole (both faring better here than in the Brady Bunch movie). But by far the most memorable characters in Dodgeball are O'Houlihan and Steve The Pirate played by Alan Tudyk. Steve is not so much a pirate as he is a wannabe pirate and that makes him even funnier. O'Houlihan is sort of a demented Yoda who offers up various words of wisdom such as "If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball".

Dodgeball may very well be remembered as one of those cult movies that pop up on Comedy Central in two or three years from now. In essence, that's an appropriate fate as Dodgeball is basically the Office Space of sports films. It's predictable and crammed to the gills with cheap humor. But it's funny. And sometimes that's all a movie needs to be to succeed.
