Its Crappie Season and I'm Quite Pleased

Written: Apr 01 '13
Pros:Crappie love them, Made in the USA, Quality, Hook is Sharp
Cons:None
The Bottom Line: Get panfish with these.

Having spent this past weekend fishing, I must say that it wasn't as good as expected at this time of year. In a few weeks this won't probably be the case, because right now should be "Crappie Season." Due to a rather late spring, the calendar has been pushed up, but I caught three of them on my recent foray at the lake. Minnows are a true draw to these panfish, and the Eagle Claw Jig Ball Double Eye Hook, is a bit of "extra ketchup on the sandwich." With Crappie, they can be a bit difficult even during ideal conditions, and this accessory has been helpful. I particularly like this size, because it allows you, with its weight to add weights or goes as is.

That is helpful, especially with regards to depths. I stuck to a six foot to eight foot one this past weekend, and that's where the limited action was. One gremlin weight was attached, and I think the yellow color of this, is a good one because I could see it. This is especially helpful with smaller sized Crappie, who often don't grab the hook with the gusto, that the larger ones can. One of them caught was very small, and was spared, after catching the fish with this set up from Eagle Claw. The other  two, were a delicious meal, even though it was not enough to fulfill my appetite. Yet I'm ready for the day, with a few more perfect conditions, that will bring my beloved panfish out to play.

What is good about this set up, is its ease of use. A lot of jigs can be difficult, and not for novices, or for experts unless they want to swear a lot. This one goes right on the line, and with a quick knot is ready to roll. There are no issues with it staying on, and the hook is very sharp. Watch out for that, but this is what keeps the "paper mouth" on, when the hook is set. I like this also for attaching the minnows, which are not the easiest bait to work with.

You can find these at any sporting goods stores. If you are desperate or in a rural area, perhaps Internet retailers will be your option. These are made in the USA, and its great being able to support an American product. The quality and life of service is great, as you can use each one for multiple casts, provided you don't catch too much of a branch or other snag. Then again, at only about $2-3 for a package of ten, there's no crying over this small amount of money. You are going to lose some in the shallows where Crappie are breeding and also feeding, but that's part of the game. The key is bringing your "A game," and if you have these with minnows, there's little chance you'll leave a lake empty handed.
