The Princeton of the South

Written: May 18 '01
Pros:"The Princeton of the South". Great faculty and liberal arts curriculum. Premier academic college.
Cons:Small town setting, lack of diversity, no sororities.
The Bottom Line: Davidson provides great scenery along with excellent academics. If you look in the college rankings, you will say: It's the best school I've never heard of

Davidson College is situated in the middle of the small town of Davidson, North Carolina. Former school of Woodrow Wilson, Davidson is known for its academic rigor and successful graduates. As a college, Davidson has some of the best faculty from around the world. Davidson as a liberal arts college promotes free thought and expression and is a very conducive atmosphere for learning; both in and out of the classroom.

The Epinions website is incorrect in saying that Davidson has about 600 students enrolled. In fact, Davidson has about 1600 students enrolled as full time. If you look at the Princeton Review every year, Davidson is at the top for quality of campus life and academics.

The drawbacks to going to Davidson are the lack of diversity and the course workloads. Davidson as a school is not very diverse, meaning that most of the applicants are usually affluent southern students. However, Davidson is actively promoting more a more diverse college and does seek students from a range of nationalities etc.

As far as school work goes, Davidson College was ranked #1 by several college magazines for having the most homework. As a student there, I will fully attest to this as I spend many hours a week in preparation for each class.

Davidson College also has very nice dormitories and student facilities. The new Knoblauch Campus Center is a fantastic new addition to student life on Campus. If you are a big sports fan then Davidson might not be a fit for you because even though Davidson is D-I, athletics are not a main focus. This can be seen in the poor attendance to football and basketball games. (I guess too many people have homework)

The small town of Davidson is a very close knit community that strives for a true sense of community. One problem that can be noted in the small "liberal" town of Davidson is that railroad tracks are physical barriers that separate whites and blacks in the town. This could be a problem for certain students.

Overall, Davidson is a great college and their graduates can attest that their four years of hard work pays off. It is true in saying that a name can go a long way. GO WILDCATS!
