Pros:One of the safest universities in the nation
Cons:In construction right now
The Bottom Line: Great campus, not too small not too big, great professors, ride variety of majors/minors to choose from.
Summer ended for me as of Aug.16th. It was the first day of moving in at Eastern Illinois University(EIU). I already got all of that junk of getting accepted to a university. Eastern had everything I wanted and more.
I am currently a freshman, of course. I reside in Andrew Hall, which is comfortable and peaceful than where the actual freshie would stay. I am equipped with many things with at home, wonderful floor members, and a great resident advisor. According to some of my friends, Andrew Hall has top of the line dorms compared to theirs at Carmen Hall.
EIU has history, it was established in 1895, with just having teachers get their education in mind. Now, it hosts every major/minor one could think of. The buildings create a sense of nostalgia, each telling their own story. For instance Pemberton Hall is known for their lady ghost that's located in the attic, which is now off limits to students. The campus is absolutely beautiful and it's one of the first things I noticed about the school. They have grounds' workers that take very good care of domestic and exotic plants that surround the campus. Our library is under construction as we speak, and that is a pain in the butt, but it is supposed to be ready as of Jan. 2002. So, if you are a student/faculty member that wants to do some reading or studying, you may have a problem because the library is located in different places around campus. Our Rec Center was just recently established and is 2nd largest in the state, 1st being DePaul. It is equipped with top of the line exercise machines as well as instructors that our certified to assist you if needed. It is also equipped with several basketball courts, volleyball, 1/8 mile track, and a rock mountain climbing device. We also have a place called the Union, which has it's own bookstore with EIU apparel and school supplies. Downstairs of the Union, there is a place called 7th Underground, which has a bar type atmosphere without the alcohol. It hosts comedians, talent acts, bands and other events as well.
I have a pretty laid back schedule for a freshman. I have noticed the time and effort each professor has put into their classes. They do not seem to be so interested in the fact they are getting paid, but they are there it seems to serve students. Each professor I have had, has offered office hours, as well as, email, and home phone numbers to contact them. They are their to help with any problem you are having and I am truly grateful for that. I have heard horror stories of profs at other universities from friends. Each building on campus is easy to find. The university is not too large and not too small. It's just right for me, and I am proud to be an EIU student. We have a fine institution and I recommend any student in their junior and senior year in high school to check the school out. If you check out the website at www.eiu.edu you can get a virtual tour of the school as well as phone numbers and email addresses to contact people to answer questions about the university.
