Pros: Nice mid size college - homey feel.
Cons: Parking
The Bottom Line: I really did enjoy my time at EMU, would I send my kids there? Honestly I hope they stay closer to home, Ypsi scares me.

| tgooch's Full Review: Eastern Michigan University |
Eastern Michigan University is located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, just 10-15 minutes from Ann Arbor. I chose EMU after high school because I was impressed with the College of Business (COB).
I lived on campus my freshman year, in Downing Hall (all female dorm). Based on visits to other Halls, I believe this one has the best rooms. My room had a large living area, our own bathroom (just big enough for a shower, sink and toilet) and two rooms on either side of the living area that housed two each. We bunked our beds and pulled our desks from the living area into the bedrooms, that made the living area very accommodating. The hall is also located right in the midst of campus so you don't have to walk far to any of your classes (unless you go to the COB) or the cafeteria. I really enjoyed my stay on campus.
My remaining three years I lived just off campus with my then fiance in a house divided into five different apartments (each having it's own bathroom, kitchen, etc). The rent was $500 (1994-1997), which I thought was really high, but later found out we were pretty fortunate, other apartments costing that much were not nearly as decent as ours (our landlords I could have lived without, but hey that's part of college life). Our place was located on Emmet street in between The Arm of Honor house and a local residents house - a retired couple whom we loved! The Arm House we could have done without at times, but we did enjoy partying with them at times too. While off campus we got to know an area bum - Ronnie, we did what we could to give him our old cans (a common occurrence around these parts) and we would often make him food when he came around and we were grilling out. Ronnie had a couple of bad episodes that scared some of our other house dwellers right out of the house and onto campus - but for the most part we knew him to be harmless.
Getting back on subject, the College of Business is where I spent most of my time. It is located about 5-6 blocks off campus. It is probably the nicest building at EMU (at that time, I hear the new library is pretty magnificent). All of my professors were knowledgeable and had no problems helping out after class whenever was convenient for the student. I was truly impressed with the experiences of many of my professors, while we did have some straight out of Grad school, there were many more that had real life careers before coming to EMU to teach. The computer lab at the college was also well kept and staffed with helpful workers.
You've read it before, you're going to read it again - PARKING SUCKS! Whenever possible I tried to leave my car parked in the driveway at our apartment, however, there were also 8 or more other people trying to park their vehicles in this same driveway that held two cars. I never tried to park on campus but I do remember my first year at EMU when my fiance came to visit he always had a difficult time finding a spot that wasn't two miles away. You truly cannot consider yourself an EMU Alumni unless you had gotten at least three parking tickets during your stint at EMU (unless of course you never drive).
The town of Ypsilanti itself leaves a lot to be desired. It's a good thing Ann Arbor is so close, or I don't know what I would have done. There are a few nice bars in Ypsi, but that's about all, no real entertainment. Unless you enjoy the Deja Vu experience ;)
On a final note - I worked at the Financial Aid Office my four years at EMU and I dealt with many different departments, while there are many employees who truly enjoy their jobs and are good at it and nice to the students, I do admit that like others have said, some of them can be pretty nasty. Offices such as Financial Aid - are not popular to the students, nothing we did, but because the entire financial aid process itself can be distressing, which sends many irate students to us, cussing at us and accusing us of stealing their money. There was not ONE employee at the OFA that I felt deserved to be treated in that manner, we honestly want to help the students - especially the student workers who are just as frustrated with the system as the students coming to see them. Please keep in mind there is only so much they can do.
