I first came to Florida State University with expectations of a fun filled 4 years at school. I was assigned to Deviney Hall (much to the chagrin of my friends- who thought it was a dump, compared to the newly renovated halls). Although the elevators didn't always work, the doors sometimes stuck, and there were old murals on the wall- covered with new graffiti, it was a place that I called home for a year.
Deviney is a co-ed dorm, divided by floors. I found everyone I met to be as welcoming as the "residence hall" itself. Doors were propped open to the hallway, friends congregated in the hall, and although the room itself wasn't anything to write home about, it was home...602.
I quickly made friends with the girls across the hall, and we often congregated on the back steps to Deviney. Coming home from classes, these back steps were a smoker's paradise, but also like a welcoming porch. Everyone stood or sat out there- even in the cold or the dead of night. We danced, we played on the lawn, we had lots of fun.
I met my husband in Deviney. He lived on the 7th floor, and worked in the hall as a receptionist. We became best friends, and then several months later, started a relationship that has lasted almost 4 years.
I would highly recommend this hall to anyone who's looking for a good time, a great college experience and interested in meeting lifetime friends. Beware of the elevators, I was stuck in one of them at one point in time, but enjoy the time you've got there.
I can accurately compare Deviney with Reynolds Hall (newly renovated) by saying that Reynolds, although you'll get a newer room, lacks the social interaction that Deviney has. At Reynolds, all the doors are card controlled, there is no front or back porch- just doors... and 95% of the time, doors are closed. With Deviney, you'll see a great number of people sitting on the floor or on the steps, truly enjoying each other's company.
One more thing before I end this- if you are ever at Florida State, make your way to Deviney Hall, ride the elevator to the 6th floor, and when the doors open, (unless they've painted over it) you'll see a mural with Snow White, a few dwarves and then Wacko from Animaniacs. Look to the bottom right- you'll see "Audrey" as a signature...That's me! I hope that FSU decides to keep Deviney hall as it is for a long time to come- I can't imagine it being "new" or renovated, I like it the way it is...
For those of you who know anyone who resides in room 602, they can check the inside of the closet, and find my name!
