When my junior year of high school drew to a close and the college acceptances started to come in, one letter made my decision very easy. Once I received my acceptance to McGill, none of the others mattered.
I was absolutely thrilled for the chance to attend one of the greatest universities in North America. I looked forward to fencing for the school and I looked forward to my classes.
I wish I had a better idea of what I was getting myself into:
McGill is a great deal. They don't charge a lot for tuition, even if you're not from Canada. Perhaps thats why about 25% of the student body is from other countries.
The problem for me was that there weren't any other americans in my major the year I attended and while I made lots of friends, not many of them were within my major. Because of this, I found it difficult to find "study buddies".
I loved going to school at McGill...and there was no doubt that the classes were some of the best I've been exposed to to this day (I've now finished coursework for both a BS and MS in engineering at other universities). I just had difficulty fitting into the engineering department. This was as much my fault as anyones and I'm sure that things have changed a bit in the 10 yrs since I was a freshman there.
I decided that I was falling through the cracks...I had classes with hundreds of students and felt like more of a number than a part of the program. This is by no means unique to McGill. It's a well known side effect of many large learning institiutions.
I decided that a small school would be a better fit for me; but have always wondered what might have been had I stayed. McGill was one of the finest institutions I've had the pleasure of attending, both academically and socially. If you want to go to a big school, and get a great education without owing the GNP of a small country in student loans I can whole-heartedly suggest you attend McGill.
If, however, you're not one who does well completely on your own...and would prefer a bit more interaction with your professors at the undergraduate level (I can only speak of freshman and sophomore levels), then I would give some thought to attending this University.
