Best Decision I Have Ever Made!
Written: Jan 06 '01
Pros:Beautiful Campus, Great Proffessors, Great Area, CTA Rapid Transit, Academic Standards, Social Life
Cons:Pre-Med Program Is Too Competitive
I have chosen Northwestern University over University of Wisconsin and University of Illinois. I feel that I have made a great choice with Northwestern University. First of all, Northwestern University is very close to my home. I live in the suurbs of Chicago, and I live at home. I occasionally sleep over at my friends dorm. Northwestern University is truly a great school for many reasons.
The cost of enrollment for Northwestern University is around $25,000, it's not a cheap school at all. Housing costs are also quite expensive for Northwestern University. The room&board is well...$7000 per year. That's a very hefty price to pay. The books that I purchased cost me a little more than $1000. They are not cheap at all. Northwestern University itself is not a cheap school at all, it's up high in prices compared to other schools. What you get, educational experience at the NWU name to back you up in life is priceless though.
The location of Northwestern University is great too. It's located in Evanston, Illinois which is about 15 minutes north of Chicago. What I like about Northwestern University is that it's easily accessed by the CTA Rapid Transit and the Metra rail system. Getting home using public transportation is easy, but I usually drive. Northwestern University is located right by the lake in the best part of Evanston. The campus itself is just beautiful. The campus is much nicer than a few other schools in the area, notablly DePaul which is located in the worser neighborhoods of Chicago. If you go to Northwestern University, you can take the CTA rapid transit up to Chicago. Just take the purple line trains to Howard, and from there take the Red Line trains to Chicago Ave, where you can access Michigan Ave and the whole city from there. Unfortunately, the U-Pass isn't offered to Northwestern University students, the U-Pass is unlimited passes on CTA busses or trains for college students in Chicago.
The proffessors at Northwestern University are some of the best that there are. If you have problems with your grades for example, you can talk to them to get things covered. Unlike in high schools, there are curves everywhere. Northwestern University is itself a very competitive atmosphere. I'm a psych major that just finished pre-med. Pre-med was probably the hardest set of courses I have ever taken in my life, though I took Organic Chemistry at Elmhurst College which is in Chicago. If you go to Northwestern University and need to take Organic Chemistry, I highy recommend that you take it at Elmhurt College or Ogden College. It's much easier and less competitive there. Pre-med is as close as you can get to hell, they all want the students to drop... Pre-med I found to be way too competitive, but luckily I made it. Now I have to study for the MCAT test, and I suggest you take Kaplan prep-courses for help, very good courses. Physics class was just about impossible, and Russian Lit was very interesting and hard. There are great course selections at Northwestern University. Great academics, it's number nine in the country. Northwestern University is a very notable school.
There are also plenty of extra-curricular activities for people to do. I joined Hillel, and other activities. There are enough activities for everyone, boating, Hillel, you name it, they got it. There isn't too large of a social life overall at the college though, there's a LOT of studying to do. I mainly get together with friends on Fridays and the weekends, rarely during the week. Thank god the breaks are very long though :-)
Northwestern University is probably one of the best colleges out there. The school itself is in a great area, and the campus is beautiful. The school is very highly competitive though, just like Ivy League schools. The logical answer for why it's not an Ivy League school is because it's not on the East Coast. It sure works like one though. Northwestern University has a name that sticks out... If you try to find a job with an undergrad degree such as in computers or something, they will see the name Northwestern University, and "WELCOME ABOARD". It's a very notable school, and no people don't confuse it with the location schools in Illinois, aka Northeastern Illinois or Southern Illinois University. You should feel good about going to this school, I do very much. Northwestern University is probably the best school (Statistically, it is) in the northern part of Illinois (Chicago land). It's better than DePaul or DeVry academically, and it's location is better too. If you want a real higher degree of success, Northwestern University is for you!
