Note. This review has been automatically transferred from "Quality of Life" of the old system to this one, the former has been removed.
Rutgers University is a school with many campus branches spreading over the entirety of New Jersey; and every single campus has one of many things in common: DEPRESSION.
Before I applied to colleges, I had to visit Rutgers on my own because for all the ten years of living in New Jersey, not one person has ever given a compliment for the state university. The campus in New Brunswick is utterly
appalling. The campus is nestled "uncomfortably" in the heart of one of the ten worst neighborhoods in all of New Jersey (actually, almost all of the Rutgers' campuses are nestled in one way or another in a bad community). I have seen students asking police to escort them to their off-campus homes after hours because of the fear of getting raped or mugged (not a good mechanism to attract prospecting students). The administration acts and carries themselves with a rather self-centered and egotistical demeanor. They were rude and did not care to give a student at least thirty seconds of quality service or time. Lines for everything is very long; from books to financial aid, or food to professors, there is very little positive progress for a student.
The campus and overall school seems to take a heavy toll on the students. Every undergrad looks depressed, homesick, and lethargic. No one seems to be proud of the school their attending, even though it is part of the AAU
(American Association for Prestigious Universities). If its not the campus or school itself that brings people to brink of anguish, it must be the sports.
Rutgers sports is almost "non-existent". Many people are egging the athletic department to demote the football program from division I to probably division IV-B (doesn't exist, thats how bad they are). The students do not really attend any games of any sport at Rutgers, nor is there any sense of camaraderie or pride exhibited among the students or players (even the mascot has "handicapped parking")
The weather is also a factor that adds to the disheartening complex of this good school. New Jersey weather is not known to bring people together or solidify a sports-enthusiastic community. It usually rains in the winter, is maliciously hot in the summer, always cloudy, and very humid (99% average) all the time. When the conditions are sunny, 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and 50% humidity, that's a call for rejoice among the New Jerseyans. I can confidently say that although Rutgers is strong academically, education is not the stock issue that molds a school into what it "should be".
Rutgers also tries to shroud its demoralizing extracurricular life by attempting to stiffen and shrink the admissions index per year (they try to make it tougher to get into so they could promote an all dork-and no-play university) I can also say that Rutgers is not a model school that we see depicted on TV like the "80's classic American party, but yet great school" that you find predominant in the west and in California. Where are the parties? So few parties that usually end up in many alcohol tickets and arrests.
Anyhow, that is why I attended Princeton (as a non-degree student) for about two semesters before transferring to the University of Colorado (also member of the AAU), arguably one of the best undergraduate engineering and science schools in the country. Rutgers is good academically, but everything else that is important for a university is not there. Good luck Rutgers and I hope you can stop letting so many people down.
