| CruMan2's Full Review: SUNY at Purchase |
Let me start out by saying if you are looking for a school for anything but the arts or sciences you should not consider Purchase. If your not read on and be open minded.
I attend the school and it was nothing I had ever expected. I enjoy classes in my major area of study (performing arts) but I cannot say much for the rest of the school. The School actually consists of two separate types of Schools acting as one. There is the L&S (liberal arts and sciences) and the Conservatories. If you've heard anything good about the school its probable about the conservatory part, if you've heard about the wackos, its about the L&S part.
The two schools are dramatically different. The L&S students are laid back and over all not very interested in being at school at all. In reality the most popular major for the school is "Undecided." As for majors; the sciences are strong but the school is not known for it, the science student also is not very comfortable with the atmosphere at Purchase. I have heard some of the faculty is pretty famous in their field. Arts is big! Students who could not make it in to a conservatory can take classes in the L&S, this is common. Other Classes include (ready!) Gay and Lesbian Studies.(I've read that it is a major now)
More normal: Intro to Media Soc., & the Arts (Great Class), and many more in the arts. The L&S Students commonly comment about the conservatory students because their is not a lot of inter-communication. Not because of attitudes or such, because if you are in a Conservatory, you are in classes ALL THE TIME! I start at 9am and go until 10pm 6 days a week. with 1hr lunch and 1 1/2hr dinner, plus homework. Plus every other Sunday there is a class. "They can't do that!" you say. They make very clear when you sign up, that is why you are there. In contrast non-conservatory students frequently do not show up to class, this is so much of a problem the school resorts to high school tactics to get people in class.
When you are there be careful not to offend anyone, and its hard. Ultra P.C. is in all the time. Unfortunately the school plays along and meals consist of tofu and meatless everything. If it does have meat its pork. Yuck! The campus police have lots of bouts with high L&S students so most of the time the students have free reign. On the mall look forward to getting run over by skate boards, bikes and scooters on a regular basis. Getting hit in the head with an ultimate Frisbee (I've read the other reviews, they are accurate!). Or getting harassed because your either male or not singing with the pot heads.
I have to make it clear that the only reason I am at the school is the reputation of the conservatories and the quality of education they give. It is very hard to play attention in one of the 2 L&S classes I have to take a year because of students who have to make everything controversial. I had one girl argue with the teacher over the fact that wymons (women) should of had the right to vote. The teacher thought so, so did the girl, the girl said they should have had the right to vote in the beginning, she stood up and started yelling at the class that it was unfair and sexists, and the forefathers should have let wymons vote and no one was standing up to them now and! Well you see. Basic History in debate? I duno.... Well you get the flavor. Do check its out if you are majoring in one of the classes they specialize in., but again, be wary.
