Party, party, party. That’s the reputation San Diego State University had back when I spent two semesters there. Actually it still is what this school and town are known for. Not so! The academics were just as tough if not tougher there than California State University, Northridge. Maybe the professors were doing their best to change that image because I never had a kick back, easy to get a good grade class there. In fact, one of the toughest classes I ever took was there at SDSU. It was a four unit accounting class that was more difficult and loaded with more homework than my other 12 units combined that semester.
In fact, that class convinced me to change the option within my major of Business Administration from accounting to management theory. Another tough one was a computer programming class that took an abnormal amount of time to prepare for. The very first day in that class, the professor announced he was a former Marine Drill Sergeant ~ so the males there best not try to pull over anything on him. Then he said he had five daughters, pre-teen to twenty something ~ so females ~ he’s heard it all. I can’t say I had an easy time in either of those classes.
The campus is very nice. Somewhat of an old style, stucco, missionary look spread out amongst quite a few acres. The whole town is wonderful with pretty much everything you might want or need, all within the 10-mile radius from the beaches ~ then on east to the campus. Living at the beach was convenient for school and I loved that fact. A major freeway took you right there. I lived in Ocean Beach and for a short time right off the boardwalk in Mission Beach. Plenty of very attractive people there in San Diego, at school and everywhere else.
Now, regarding that party reputation. I don’t remember a weekend during the two semesters I was there that I didn’t know of a party. They were, for the most part, full of drinking, rowdiness and wild fun. A few crazy ones there but they added to the amusement. I had lots of good times there and didn’t miss too many parties.
All in all, my decision to spend a year there was one of my best decisions ever. The town seemed catered toward youth, from the schools to the beaches and even the businesses. Since my school days I have spent many vacations returning to San Diego and recommend this school to serious students who can have a good time without letting that interfere with their ability to learn.
