| pansy4agirl's Full Review: South Dakota School of Mines & Technology |
SDSM&T has a world-wide reputation as an outstanding engineering and science institution. Founded in 1885, the school has been a leader in preparing world-class engineers and scientists for over a century. The graduates design, develop and operate the most modern, cutting-edge technology to meet world-wide challenges such as global warming, health care, energy resource development, mineral extraction, environmental quality, futuristic transportation and national defense.
With 29 major undergraduate programs, Master of Science Degrees offered in 10 fields of Engineering and Science, and Doctorate of Philosophy Degrees in Geological or Materials Engineering, Environmental and Water Resources, graduates of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology are held in the highest regard by their fellow leaders in industry, consulting, government, health and education. The school has diversified and expanded to meet the needs of engineering and science throughout the world.
SDSM &T is a medium-size school, located in the heart of the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota, its campus along the edge of Rapid City, in the western part of South Dakota. Rapid City lies between the mysterious South Dakota Badlands and the two-million acres of the Black Hills. The stunning and majestic Mount Rushmore monument, and emerging Crazy Horse Memorial are within 45 minutes of the campus. The beauty and cultural history of the Black Hills draw millions of visitors to the area each year, the school itself attracting students from all over the globe, enrolling students from 39 states and 27 countries.
In 1998, the school was recognized by Barron's, a leading resource for higher education information, as one of the 300 "best buys" nationwide. The school can boast that within six months of graduation, over 90% of the students are either working in their career fields or pursuing graduate/professional degrees. Starting salaries for Tech graduates average more than $43,000. for engineering and science.
The school is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, which is the recognized accrediting agency for the north central states. In addition, the science and engineering departments are also fully accredited by nationally recognized agencies, which have recognized and accredited all the undergraduate curricula for SDSM&T engineering programs.
The school has an average yearly attendance of about 2,000 students, 250 of which are graduate students. The student/faculty ratio is about 31/1, male/female ratio about 70% male, 30% female, and computer to student ratio is better than 1 computer for every 10 students.
The schools' location in the heart of the Black Hills also offers students opportunities to balance their academic activities with hiking, biking, skiing, camping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, spelunking, scuba diving, and mountain climbing.
SD Tech and a career in technology just might be the school for you, if....
*you change screen savers more often then the oil in your car
*you have more toys than your little brother or sister
*your computer cost more than your vehicle
*you know more people on the internet than in real life
*you have at some time in your life tried to build a phazer from a garage door opener and camera flash attachment
Humor aside, the school is one of South Dakota's pride, with an environment steeped in tradition and history, progressive use of technology, affordable tuition, countless outdoor recreational activities nearby, in a university nationally recognized for academic excellence, with dedicated and distinguished faculty ready to provide individualized attention.
Since the best (only?) way to know if South Dakota Tech is right for you, planning a visit to the campus and meeting with faculty, students, and staff, with personalized tours of the departments in which you have a special interest, where you can talk with faculty, visit and even observe classes in progress, I recommend contacting the school directly to arrange a visit, via email at admissions@sdsmt.edu, or call them toll-free at (800) 544-8162 for more information.
