The Latin American Studies Department at Tulane is one of the oldest programs in the country. I didn't know before I came here that this was what I wanted to study, but as soon as I became involved in some of the many classes inside and outside of the department, I knew that it was the right place to be.
The department is made up of very caring professors and grad students. They offer summer programs in Mexico and Cuba, and offer many opportunities to meet with the faculty and grad students within the department, with coffees and weekend programs. I have a personal relationship with my advisor, who really cares about my education.
Sometimes, however, it is frustrating, because the department is small and one occasionally has to search for classes to take. They also tend to change policy without warning, and it is difficult to keep up with requirements. It is definitely worth the trouble, though. There is not another department I have seen at Tulane in which the faculty, grad students, and undergrads have such a close relationship with each other.
The class sizes are perfect. I have not yet had a class in the LAST department with more than 25 students, and the upper-level ones often have less than fifteen. The department is definitely worth any small frustration, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in studying Latin America.
