I absolutely love Tulane. Now if you visit Tulane, depending on who you're with, etc. and exactly who you are, your impression will be different. Let me tell you who I am to first give you an idea of what my perspective is.
I am a liberal tree-hugging PoliSci major who lives in the sticks, no joke in the middle of Vermont State Forest in central Vermont. Now I've done quite a bit of traveling in the US, etc. and I'm pretty cultured (we're not so far from NYC and Boston). My absolute dream is to be in the Foreign Service where I can travel all over the world, learning about different cultures and languages and people, etc. So, you know if you go to Tulane, you might realize that you're not surrounded by so many southerners but rich upper class white kids from New York and New Jersey. Well, this is Tulane's facade. Behind all that, we are a bunch of hard working, highly intelligent, intriguing student body. It make take you a while but I believe that everyone finds there niche at Tulane. Sometimes it takes a while, but you definitely find it and you'll love it!
Tulane's academics are excellent. I loved all my classes, most were pretty tough, but that's how I learn best and I was challenged every day by my professors and classmates to broaden my mind and open my eyes to different ideas, cultures, and peoples. I really feel that Tulane has expanded my mind in so many ways not only through academics, but clubs, extracurriculars, social groups, different situations and experiences, etc.
Tulane has a wide variety of majors and programs to choose from. You will take classes (can take I should say) that you never thought you would ever be interested in, but these professors make it interesting and open you up to a whole new and exciting world. You can take classes on Swahili or Arabic, Neurosciences, Shakespeare's England, Darwin, Aerospace studies, and the list goes on.
Tulane has lots of clubs to choose from also. Anything from sports to academic clubs to community service Tulane has it all. To mention a few Tulane has a rock climbing club, Skydiving, Environmental, Premed, Model UN, major oriented clubs, Varsity sports, intramural, etc.
Tulane offers a wide range of activities through social programs and TUCP (the campus entertainment department/club) offers movies a few times a week, speakers like Kevin Smith, Spike Lee, bands like Garbage, GLove and Special Sauce, and Ani DeFranco. There are constant speakers at Tulane, conferences, seminars, etc. You simply keep your eyes peeled for signs and posters, its as simple as that.
Through all of these diverse classes, clubs and organizations, and different people you find your niche and discover your ultimate likes and dislikes. You will find what drives you through life and what you truly want to do. I went to Tulane knowing only a little bit what my goal in life was (Political Science) but I never knew what I wanted to do with it. Well, I found my passion and now I'm positive that I want more than anything to be in the Foreign Service and participate in the changing of our world for the better.
Every educated adult out there that hears that I go to Tulane automatically gets that look on their face of recognition and appreciation of the school. It's well known for its great reputation and they don't call it the Harvard of the South for nothing.
