Alright coming from the San Luis Obispo, Ca county I was not interested in moving to Souther California to attend college. But the way it worked out, I cannot choose the location of a school and thus I have enrolled in UC Riverside. Now the way it goes as far as the UC system is that it is a high profile education system, and somehow it is assumed though that Riverside does not follow this rule. I was mistaken, this university is everything that any of the other UC schools are and more. Among the 12,000 or so students enrolled at this colleg (lowest in UC system) I have found a world of facilities that allow me to direct my future in just about any direction that I find applicable.
Although Riverside the city isn't the most beautiful place on Earth, this school does a good job of not showing it. The campus is actually quite pretty, and although air quality is sometimes a factor, it is not usually and therefore leaves for some beautiful days. The desert mountains are crisp and clear, and not far from the campus, the landscape of the school is clean and looks new. The campus life is always abuzz during the day. The commons cafeteria area in the center of the school is a social grouping area that attracts any kind of person.
The dormitories of the school are only 2 and so it is quite compact. Aberdeen Inverness is the oldest, but was renovated in the early 90's so it doesn't feel it's age. The other dorm is Loathian in which is sectioned into a west and east wing, the west wing being a bit decrepit but liveable, and the east wing being the newest addition to the schools housing and is very nice. In the works right now (Jan 2000) the school is busy building yet another dormitory which will be ready by Fall 2000 I believe. It will allow all incoming students to live on campus and not have to worry about not getting a spot in the school's housing, a problem at the time being. One complaint that I have about the dorms though, is the food. It is not good. And even though the food is sometimes good, it is served at inconvenient times (for me at least). They allow only certain times to eat and usually if you eat at the normal time, it is mobbed, and if you wait just before it closes, the food is cold. Although I hear they are working on it, I don't know what they will try to improve it. And if you are planning on attending this school be sure that you know that on the weekends that Aberdeen residents must walk over to the Loathian cafeteria (about 200 yards) for all of their meals, starting with Dinner on Friday night. The dorms are good but not great, they are sort of expensive too, so living in the dorms is a good experience if you care to. If I had known so much about this in the beginnning I would have probably tried to find an appartment.
The education system is efficient and competent. With a heavy science program, it focuses on programs such as physics, chemistry, geology, biology, and bio med. The math program is ranked high amongst the UC system also.
To end with, I have been happily surprised with UC Riverside, and am glad that I have chosen it as my undergraduate college. I had my doubts, and no longer have any (other than the dorms).
