| jsallen's Full Review: University of Nebraska-Lincoln |
I've lived in Lincoln for 8 years. I started working for UNL 8 months ago and became a student this past semester. My experiences with UNL, as a result of all of this have been widely ranged. I've seen the school from the outside looking in, from the perspective of a student and from behind the scenes.
The one thing about UNL that sticks out the most in my mind is the Spirit of the students and staff members. You can't drive through downtown Lincoln on a game day without seeing the spirit that the fans of the football team have. The entire city is painted red on football Saturdays. Tailgate parties erupt all over the place. Mobs of fans walk miles from their car to the stadium.
But beyond the football spirit, UNL has a spirit of acceptance and diversity beyond what I'd experienced at another college I'd attended. Recently the school passed legislature to make health insurance benefits available to student's same-sex partners. The Performing arts department is beyond impressive. The numerous cultural and social clubs leave a place for everyone. The Student Involvement department goes above and beyond what's expected of it to offer a place for students to feel they belong.
I have in my classes learned more than just facts from a textbook. I have learned about cultures that differ from mine. I've learned about lifestyles that I've never experienced.
The students that I've met have been open and friendly. The employees in other offices have been more than willing to explain the different steps for registering, signing up for financial aid, and any other challenge I find myself faced with.
The school has hundreds of little bonuses that not all schools offer. There is a Recreational Center that is impressive on anyone's standards. A campus that is massive and beautiful offers picturesque landscaping, artistic sculptures and numerous hide-a-way spots for a solo lunch, quiet reflection or peaceful studying. The library is large and well-layed out.
The Union is absolutely amazing. It caters to so many different needs including offering a Starbucks coffee shop, four separate fast-food lunch options, a Bakery, a Ticketmaster outlet, places for studying, a huge bookstore and a women's restroom that you just have to see for yourself. (I don't know what the men's looks like off hand.)
The school newspaper is a daily chronicle that does it's best to cover local and national news. It doesn't cover up any flaws in the UNL system, but rather holds a mirror to them and demands that something be done to fix them. The letters the the editors section is constantly filled with the opinions and voices of the student and staff members. Activism is an everyday effort for the paper.
One of the small things that set this school apart from the rest includes the ability to charge your books to your consolidated account--any college student knows how handy that is. UNL also offers the ability to register over the phone for your classes.
Without a doubt I am glad that I chose UNL and would recommend anyone who wants to live in a smaller city with a big heart, attend a diverse school, and immerse yourself in school spirit to check out UNL
