Intro
Sick of dining? Wondering where to get a good slice of pizza? Well, you’ve come ot the right place, Penn students. This is an epinion to briefly talk about my experiences with some of the on campus eateries on campus at Penn.
Cheesesteaks
It’s a Philly thing. While you are here, if you eat beef you have to try one. So, I thought I would start of the epinion here. The best ones on campus? Welp, Billybob’s is a favorite up on Spruce street. But ever since it turned into a chic French pastry shop/Chinese take out/cheesesteak joint, there’s just something missing. A lot of Penn students will deeply miss the old shady shack of Billybob’s. But at 2am when the parties shut down, Billybob’s might still be the place to head.
Over closer to Chestnut? Then hit Abner’s. Besides if our Quakers score 100 in a game, you get a free steak with your ticket. GO QUAKERS!!
Pizza
Yum, it tastes good, and it is definitely perfect for a college student’s budget (not that budget is necessarily important to many Penn students). Anyway, if you love Papa Johns, there is one on campus, and it’s the same yummy stuff you would get at home. Delivery is quick, and you have to try the cheese sticks.
Looking for a typical pizza shop pizza? Well, Allegro’s is my favorite – and convenient over there at 39th and Spruce. Powelton isn’t bad either. But they both close way before parties are over, or way before you are done cramming for finals, what do you do?
There’s only one pizza shop open REALLY late that delivers. Dominos. By far, not my favorite, but it’s good to know there is one pizza place open.
Diners.. or diner
Students have long complained that there is no true diner on campus. To try to combat this, Penn brought in an Eat at Joe’s. If anything, their attempt was futile. Eat at Joe’s isn’t 24 hours, the service is slow, and the food is not on the cheap size.
After receiving many complaints, they began staying open later and having specials Service however, remains slow. I have to admit, I love their French toast, and it is fun to go there for milkshakes if you just want to sit down and catch up with an old friend.
Fast food
Houston hall used to be the place to go, but until this year it had been closed for my stay at Penn. I am excited that it is reopening and giving students more of a selection of places to dine on campus.
There are 2 McDonald’s… one in CHOP down by the Quad and one on 39th and Walnut. Both have slow service, but definitely a quick, familiar meal. The burger king was closed as the Sundance theater went up, I am not sure if it is reopening.
Boston Market over on 39th and Chestnut provides a quick meal that almost tastes like home cookin’.
Food trucks
There are a lot of food trucks around campus, although not nearly as many as there used to be. A great way to pick up a quick lunch if you don’t have an hour in between classes for lunch. Egg and cheese is a favorite for breakfast… nowhere else can you get a breakfast sandwich on a hoagie roll that is yummy for under $2. Watch out for the cholesterol though.
There are all kinds of different trucks, from the standard sandwich/steak truck… to a fruit salad truck… to my favorite the crepe truck. I can’t say enough about crepes, but you have to try one. It is rated as one of the best hidden secrets in Philly, so trust me, you gotta try it at least once (I will take a grilled chicken crepe over a cheese steak anytime).
That’s about it…
I’m sorry I didn’t get to rate any Chinese places, or at least a more variety of foods, but I wrote about what I ate most in my 2 prior years at Penn. One more week until crepes, I can’t wait.
