University of Phoenix is a Diploma Mill

Written: Oct 05 '06
Pros:one night per week
Cons:very expensive; plagiarism is the norm; no instruction is given; learning teammates do nothing.
The Bottom Line: The University of Phoenix is a diploma mill because there is no academic integrity. They sell degrees, plain and simple.

I am a current ungrad student enrolled on ground (not online or FlexNet), pursuing a BS in Information Technology.

The University of Phoenix is nothing but a diploma mill. Students regularly copy and paste material from the internet and hand it in as their own work. In a real university, handed-in assignments are checked for plagiarism. If the student is caught plagiarizing, he or she will face punishment. At U of Phoenix, plagiarism is standard practice.

Instructors do not teach the course materials. I've had a C programming language class and a Java programming class where the instructors did not teach the course materials. There was ABSOLUTELY NO PROGRAMMING taught.

I'm being very serious: if you are lazy and want to buy a degree with no effort, then the University of Phoenix is for you. On the other hand, if you want to actually learn something and get an education, then Phoenix is definitely NOT for you.

Always remember that upon graduation, an HR manager may give you a placement test or, at the very least, ask you some basic questions that you will be expected to answer correctly regarding your chosen field of study. If you cannot answer these questions, you will be disqualified from further consideration. A manager will not hire a U of Phoenix programmer who cannot program, nor will an accounting manager hire a U of Phoenix accounting grad who knows nothing about accounting.

This is far more to getting professional employment than presenting a degree. You have to be able to demonstrate knowledge in your field. With a University of Phoenix degree, you're going to be found out in a New York minute that you have absolutely no idea what you're doing.

Stay away from the University of Phoenix.
