UOP - another degree mill

Written: Oct 14 '00
Pros:Excellent systems to get students into the process
Cons:not inexpensive

UOP exists in several cities in the US and continues to grow. They seem to have the business of creating and space and then providing education within an environment down to a science. But, be cautious about getting an instructor who may have less knowledge about the course than the students taking it.
Having finished a masters program four years ago, I thought it might be time to be stimulated again. UOP took my money but did nothing for intellectual stimulation. The instructor who taught the course I took in Organizational Development was nothing but a dysfunctional guy looking to tell his story in 10 classes, and the more it went on, the more grandiose the stories and his life became.
I was impressed by UOP's business of getting people into classes, getting them registered, oriented, and into a classroom. They have built a facility here that is rather impressive. However, my class met at the hotel across the street. So, apparently, they are growing.
I found that their student processes are very well designed, and seem to be effective and efficient. However, the one instructor I met was horrible and not masters level material. I dropped the course, and to their credit, the academic dean requested to meet with me to obtain some input. He was a good listener and agreed with my assessments and was very apologetic and gracious.
I do know of a few people who teach there who are good instructors, however, I later found out that they knew this guy was bad, but just did not know how bad.
My money was returned, minus registration fees and the "cost of the first class". It did not take long to be reimbursed. However, I would be pretty reluctant to go back, based on the experience I had. If you are looking for a degree mill and not interested in investing time, energy and effort in your education, this might be a good place. I hate to make a judgement on taking one class, but my sense is that this place pushes people through. There is truly a difference between a degree and an education.
