Good ole' University of South Florida. I can tell you from my 7 years attending this institution that it is an up and coming university concentrating on gaining a solid reputation on being a research institution. This endeavor pursued by the former president, Betty Castor, will continue with the soon -to -be chosen new president.
The school itself is about 40 years old and has gone through some major cosmetic and structural changes in the last 4 years. Additions include a football team, the Bulls, new Education building, new parking garage, and a new row of student housing to be finished by Fall 2000.
Academically, from attending classes at opposing sides of campus, I have gained a good feel for the overall teaching philosophy of the university.
In the Fine Arts department you will find brilliant professors that promote real world skills involving critical thinking and are more than accessible to the student and their pursuits. The department though suffers from a building that has been neglected by the universities structural enhancement endeavors. The building is literally falling apart.
The classes are typically 10-30 people so you are able to not only interact with other students but also learn from them in your class interactions.
The Business department is nationally accredited and has a big reputation for developing students that remember the institution when they become successful (read: alumni gifts) The classes are less individual oriented and can contain from 40-350 students. One on one help is a little harder to get, however, the professors are able to be contacted by email and respond accordingly. The basic Business classes are taught largely using the internet and corresponding websites as tools to study and even submit assignments. This component is helpful since the classes are so large.
The university socially has a large number of clubs that represent the diversity at University of South Florida. The college is largely known as a commuter school, and the average age of students is a little higher than the norm. The makes for a comfortable and positive learning experience for both young and old. The university has a major concert/sports venue: The Sun Dome on campus and another smaller lecture/concert venue, near the student activity center, the Marshal Center. The university includes a wonderful contemporary art museum and a separate gallery that students are able to show their own work in.
The only drawback at the university and its a big one to students is the parking. Parking is unbearable at the start of any semester because there simply is not enough of it. By the end of the semester it gets a little better, however you still have to do numerous drive-bys to find a spot. Hopefully in the next couple years this problem will be attended to.
The pros definitely outweigh the cons at this institution and the geographical location, Tampa, is a major plus. With the enhancements that have been made and are still currently being worked on, the University of South Florida is just beginning its glory.
