Hi,
I'm a freshmen in UW Madison and my first year is almost over now. I've been taking a physics classes during my 2nd semester and students are told to do our homeworks by this WebAssign program via internet.
First, this WebAssign is best for TAs, not for students. In this system, teachers post their questions on internet and students are to solve them by monday morning 10 AM, usually. The answers are graded automatically, so the TAs don't have to grade their students' homeworks. Pretty good sounding system but fundamentally doesn't help students. When u dont get the right answer, u dont get to know the right answer nor the process to get to the right answer. What is the fu**** point to solve these questions?
Secondly, TAs just post their answer and range the error percentage to 1%. This means that point something difference in my answer can give me no points. No begging for points, no partial credit. Answers in solving physics problems can vary easily. For example, the magnitude of gravity, g = 9.8 m/s^2. But, more precisely, 9.81m/s^2. For solving a long sequenced problem, the final answer can be out of that 1% error range. No solution given for solved problem nor correcting the problems in right ways. Total piece of trash.
Lastly, this WebAssign is not cheap. Only buying a textbook might cost $80. With this system it easily reaches over $110. The faculties and teachers should dedicate more for students here. Attempting to save couple hours for grading students' works, students are killing their times on Sunday night to get to the right answer that would never be provided if u get it wrong.
In my lab session, for the apology from the WebAssign doing bad job, TAs gave out $20 off coupons for next purchase of the same system. Are u kidding? F*** off and let the TAs correct the students' works by hands, in a better classical way.
