Some time ago I wrote a review of Coach Bennett's program entitled "Can they take the next step?" In that piece I questioned if even the excellent coaching of Bennett could overcome the relative deficiency of talent in his program compared to the true national powers. I admit that at the time I wanted to believe the answer was yes, but in my heart I felt the program had pretty much peaked at its current level. In all fairness I asked if they could take the next step and the answer is resoundingly "Yes!"
The last three weeks have been the most exciting time to be a Badger basketball fan in my lifetime. These young men's run to the Final Four has brought a joy to my heart that is hard to explain. As a long time coach myself it is so gratifying to see a coach stick to his guns and prove that he does know what he is doing. This storyline could have been lifted right out of the movie Hoosiers. A young team fights the controlling ways of its old school coach and struggles through the early part of the year. Then as time seems to be running out, they give in to the old man's ways and find redemption. Generations connect and a coach's coach proves once and for all that he is the best in the business. Is this a dream for a great Hollywood movie? Yes, but the fact is it happened in Madison Wisconsin this very year.
I just finished watching this dream season end to a very good Michigan State team in the national semifinals. This loss is no way should diminish the amazing ride this team has taken its fans and others on this March. I cannot recall if their was ever a more improbable Final Four participant, but even if there was, I will never forget this one. Before I forget I would like to thank them.
My January review wondered if the old-school style of Bennett could attract enough talented players to compete nationally. Little did I know this genius would render that a moot point. I believe the University of Wisconsin has just entered the big time of college basketball. This tournament run should give us the exposure needed to attract even more talented players. Our coach has proven he doesn't need superstars to succeed, its scary to imagine what this team might do if we start to get some. As a lifelong Badger fan I invite everyone to climb on the bandwagon now, cause there won't be any room soon. Coach if you need a 30 year old slow short guy I think I have eligibility left.
