So you are thinking of going to Madison, or you just got accepted and you are wondering what to expect from the food service?
Well...don't panic, it's not a nightmare. There are four places to eat on Campus (with the meal plan) that are accessible pretty much all the time and to anyone living in the dorms, these are: Frank's Place, Pop's, Carson Gully, and Ed's Express.
Frank's and Pop's serve the same food as do Carson's and Ed's. The difference being that Frank's and Carson's are on the Lakeshore part of Campus, bye Cole, Bradley, Slichter, (etc) and Ed's and Pop's are on the Southeast side of campus by Ogg, Sellery, and Witte.
There are two other places to eat on campus with the meal plan, these places are open limited hours and are in Chadbourne and Liz Waters Dorms. I have never eaten at the cafeterias in these dorms, however I have heard that they are somewhat superior to "normal" food that can be got at the four places above.
The "normal" food is not bad though. The Food Service at UW-Madison offers lots of choices and usually has a vegetarian option or two. The people at the food service also try to cater to people of different religions and cultures. For example, there is fish served on fridays during lent, food that is kosher for passover during passover (i.e. lots of matzah lasagna and potatoes ;), and every once in awhile they try to spice things up with an "ethnic food" night.
Pros:
* Pop's and Frank's offer a salad, fruit, and sandwhich bar in case you don't like the hot dishes served that day.
* Ed's and Carson's are usually open til 11pm so that you can feed your latenight munchie attacks.
* Coffee and Icecream bar!
* They tell you calories/fat in each dish that they make for those people who want to try to keep off the freshman 15.
* Ed's/Carson's have Pizza, Wraps, subs, and all sorts of other "junk" food for when you are sick of Pop's and Frank's "home-cooked" goodness.
Cons:
* If it can be fried (and even if it can't) they'll do it. Fried Corn nuggets anyone? (blech)
* You can only eat so many grilled cheese sandwhiches, pizza and hamburgers.
All in all the food Service at Madison is not that bad. Just make sure that you make use of the salad, soup, fruit, and sandwhich bar. And remember, go out to eat once in awhile...it's a nice break from Dorm Food and State Street has tons of great places to eat for those who are trying to escape from the somewhat monotony of Dorm Food.
