I won't bore you with another review of how great the school is--because it is a great school and I'm sure the graduates can easily describe it much easier. I just want to warn potential high school student about something so that they don't make a big mistake:
Students applying to UW-Madison should NOT ONLY apply to Madison, for two very large reasons: 1. Madison is known for their high standards, and do not normally accept people with Average GPA's under 3.7. 2. Madison's acceptance procedure--however typical and effective--is very deceiving to students. Let me explain:
When you apply, don't expect a response in a few months. It won't happen. They'll send you a letter telling you they received their application and are reviewing it. Unfortunately, they will NOT tell if you have been accepted until the end of the regular school year, too late to apply to most other colleges. Why? Because Madison waits until they get all of their applications so they can pick the BEST students who applied. IT IS NOT ON A FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVE BASIS. By the time you are told you are either accepted or not, the common January deadlines is many months passed. Luckily, I applied to two other schools (UW-Eau Claire and University of Iowa), both of which I was accepted immediately.
Yes, it is a GREAT school offing TOP-NOTCH education, sports, facilities, etc. but don't make the same mistake a lot of my friends made and ONLY apply there, only to find out too late you weren't accepted, just in case this happens to you. Find some other schools of interest and apply to them early as well--it's only a few bucks for forms and is MUCH better than having to wait until second semester to start because you didn't get accepted to Madison, and your other college applications were too late to make first semester. Bottom line: Plan ahead. Parents: Even if your kid is top-notch, have a fall-back school just in case.
