I applied to Willams College a year ago thinking it was my dream school. I was accepted and attended one of the Williams Preview sessions. It seemed to be everything I expected. Brilliant professors, huge dorms, and a vibrant extra-curricular scene. The more I hung around the people, however, the more I realized the typical Williams student has much in common. Most are east-coasters, many of whom attended a private high school. A great majority are involved with athletics. But perhaps the most prevailing thing was the intensity of the atmosphere. Williams truly is work hard, play hard. For a down to earth, midwestern kid like me I felt like I would have a hard time fitting in.
Drinking, like at most colleges, is pretty prevalent. Most Williams students would tell you, that drinking at Williams is probably above average due to its isolated location and high-intensity atmosphere.
My suggestion to prospective students? Stay for an overnight visit, talk
to the people. If they seem like they can be your best friends one day, by all means go to Williams. But if your instincts tell you different, you might find you'll be happier elsewhere.
