Great EKCO Cooling Racks
Written: Aug 16, 2012
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Inexpensive, last for years, well made and sturdy
Cons:None
The Bottom Line: A must for my kitchen, I love these cooling racks and use them alot
I've had my set of EKCO Cooling Racks for many years and they still function as well today as they did the day I brought them home. I use these for a wide variety of cooking needs.
Description
Each cooling rack measures 10" by 10" and they are made from heavy gauge chrome-plated steel. Each rack has small feet that raise it off the counter about 1/2".
There are 15 bars across with a support bar that runs down the center of both racks. The space between the bars is just less than 5/8". They are silver colored and are dishwasher safe.
My Experience
These are great cooling racks and they hold up extremely well. I use these all the time when I bake. I cool cookies on these racks, as well as cakes and pies, banana bread, and other baked goods that I need to let cool.
The counter in our new home is a solid surface material, but the builder warned me not to place anything hot on it because it is made of a plastic and it could melt! Because of this I am very careful to always use these to cool any items that come out of my oven, even casseroles that don't need to remain warm.
The wires on the rack allow air to flow under the foods, helping them to cool off at a faster rate. I made banana bread just last night and used these racks to allow my bread to cool off (we're always anxious to cut into it and eat the first slice of still warm banana bread!). The racks did leave small indentations on the bottom of my banana bread, but it wasn't too bad and not at all visible since it was on the bottom of the loaf.
Even though I have had these for years they are in great condition. Mine aren't even discolored and there is no hint of rust anywhere, even though I do wash these in my dishwasher.
When I use these to cool cookies I will occasionally get some pieces of cookie stuck to the racks, and when this happens I use a Brillo pad to scrub it off, which works well.
I have another cooling rack with taller legs and I really prefer these low profile racks made by Ekco. The taller version doesn't seem as sturdy and the legs move outward when any weight is placed on them.
I highly recommend EKCO Cooling Racks, and the set of two racks retails for around $5, a great price!
