| mairchik's Full Review: Canon PowerShot S45 Digital Camera |
I got my PowerShot S45 camera in summer 2003 for $420 what seemed to be a good deal almost two years ago. And more I have this camera, more I love it and extremely satisfied with its quality and performance. When I opened the box, I was impressed by a very nice design, but found it too weighty for its compact size. Camera uses NB-2L lithium battery and I like very much the excellent very light and compact design of the charger it comes with. The only complaint beside the camera weight is its battery life. So I bought another battery for $30. It takes about 80 minutes to charge the battery.
Now about excellent qualities of this camera. First, a very nice and bright 1.8" TFT LCD monitor which gives the excellent image colors and details. I saw many other cameras and I think PowerShot Sxx cameras have one of the best LCD screens. Second, this camera has almost all manual controls. I was surprised to find beside traditional ones, like aperture priority (Av) or shutter-speed priority (Tv), the control of flash power via flash exposure compensation.
Finally, the strongest and the best I found in PowerShot S45 is amazing picture quality for the compact camera of this class. In particular, I was amazed by night shots. In my opinion, night pictures usually reveal camera's weaknesses, but with S45 I was surprised. Unlike many other compact cameras, night pictures look very clean with almost no noise on them.
To conclude, a few words about robustness of this camera I discovered recently. Unfortunately my S45 fell from 4 feet stand directly on asphalt, was deformed a bit and stopped functioning due to a strong impact: lens was open and got jammed outside. I was sure that it is unrepairable and I can do nothing. I started to think about new camera but just tried to push with quite a force lens back inside. I did that and... it started to work again!!! It was hard to believe that camera can survive after such an impact! So I am happy with my camera and keep on making excellent quality pictures!
