fhiga's Full Review: Cobra Electronics ESD 6060 Radar Detector
I bought mine for $25 at Circuit City during the Thanksgiving weekend. What a great deal I found!
I have been using it since, and it has proved to be sensitive enough, either radar and laser detection.
First I will describe its features:
- Dash mounted unit, either on your dashboard or windshield
- Laser,X,K,Ka,Superwide Ka,VG-2 and Safety Alert detection
- 360 degree laser detection
- Distinctive audible alerts for each radar band
- Visual detected band display X,K/Ka,Laser,VG-2/SafetyAlert
- City/Highway filter
- Auto Mute
- 10 step volume dial control
- 12V cigarrette plug
I got my unit mounted in the windshield, I was travelling northbound on highway 53 in Illinois, and about at 1/2 mile, saw a white trooper car (Crown Victoria Police Interceptor) parked on the left shoulder. Immediately the "L" lit up, indicating a laser gun was pointed at me. Even though I had the unit mounted a bit high in my windshield, this little Cobra unit was able to detect the trooper car was point right at me! That was my first encounter with a laser gun, on the heavily scanned I-53.
A few miles after, my Cobra unit started chirping slow at first, getting frantically faster, showing up the K/Ka band icon. Some 300-400 feet away, I saw another trooper car parked on the left shoulder, checking on another speed trap.
The unit will chirp at you, giving false alarms on the X-band whenever you cross in front of cellular towers that have microwave antennas. Just press on the City button, to mute those false alarms.
It will also trigger when going near automatic doors in strip mall, I have seen it go several times in the K/Ka band. You just have to get used to that.
This unit has given no false alarms on Laser, though.
What I don't like, is that to turn the unit on/off, you just scroll the volume dial down. It should have an independent power button to turn the unit off.
