Good performance, some interference...

Written: Jan 18 '05
Pros:Good video quality, easy setup
Cons:IR Transmitter didn't work, poor documentation
The Bottom Line: Overall it is a solid device that does what it says. Video quality is good but watch out for other 2.4GHz devices.

I purchased the RCA WVS150 Video sender as a way of transmitting TV signals from our tri-level's ground floor living room to our lower level den. I use the video sender mostly for capturing video from the upstairs TV to our PC in the den. So far I've been pretty happy with it's performance.

Here are my grades:

Setup: B+
The setup of the video sender is pretty easy. The units incorporate directional antenna that must be aimed at each other to get the best picture. It's not too difficult but does take some trial and error especially if you don't have a line of sight from one unit to the other. The Infrared transmitter has not worked at all for me. I've got an RCA DVR that I'm trying to control with it but have not yet been able to get that to work at all. I've not contacted RCA about it yet however perhaps they'll have some ideas.

Video Quality: A-
The transmitted video quality is pretty good. Not to the level of a direct digital connection but for most purposes it'll provide a fine picture. I have run into interference problems between my 802.11G Wireless Access point and this device, but considering they both use the same 2.4GHz band, that's not surprising. I've gotten around that problem by adjusting the channels on each to be as far apart as possible. Also if I'm doing something really critical on the video adapter, I shut down the wireless portion of the access point. I've not encountered any interference from the video sender on my wireless network.

Documentation: C-
The manual included with the device is not sufficient. It gives very limited descriptions of the setup, very little troubleshooting information and now support information. I know this is a fairly simple device but there are areas of operation that need better explanation. Also, RCA's website has no support information for this device. Truly disappointing.

Overall: B+
Overall not a bad little device. It would be great for someone who just wants to be able to watch the same TV shows in multiple rooms. I'm not sure what to make of the problems with the infrared transmitter, but if I could get it working that would make it more useful to me.
