| gsearle's Full Review: Sony MDR-G52LP Consumer Headphones |
The behind-the-head design is a great idea. These headphones support themselves on your ears, not your head. There is no need to adjust the size of the headphones, and they tend to stay on your head, unlike other deigns which tend to fall off if you move too quickly. Note that these headphones have no adjustability whatsoever: One size fits all. They take a little getting used to.
I have a large head (it's hard to find hats that fit), and usually have to adjust headphones to their maximum size. These fit perfectly, although they have a tendancy to rub against my shirt collar if I tilt my head back even a little. If you wear glasses, the ear supports have to share the space. Getting your glasses on and off can be a little tricky, but it tends to work out. It's something to get used to.
The sound quality is "good" - not "great", and not "fair". The extreme highs are not as crisp as they could be, and the bass response is ok. If you are looking for audiophile-quality headphones, go elsewhere -- you should spend at least $50.00. These headphones replaced a $50.00 pair of Radio Shack "titanium" headphones, which sounded spectacular, but soon fell apart. I miss the cleaner sound of the better headphones, but the Sonys will do nicely.
If you listen to music at work, these are great. They stay on your head, and they don't block outside sounds. If your coworkers are trying to get your attention, you can hear them (unless you turn the volume up too high.) Conversely, these headphones don't "buzz" -- you won't be disturbing those around you (again, at normal volume levels.)
Update: If you find the little rubber ear supports uncomfortable, just pull them off! With a careful, downward tug on the part that sticks down, they'll come right out. Of course, you can get them back on when you need to. This doesn't do any damage, and the headphones still stay on your head rather well. I wouldn't do anything really active without the ear supports, however. Ahh - my glasses don't hurt anymore.
These headphones will also flatten inside of a notebook computer bag or briefcase. The earpieces will bend inward, since the plastic headband is very flexible and durable.
