| OhNubilousOne's Full Review: Sony MDR-G52LP Consumer Headphones |
Sony products always have a strange way of captivating me. Whether it’s the electric blue casing of the MZR-90 minidisc player/recorder or the now-trademark black silhouette of the Playstation 2, Sony’s products have always been designed for both form and function. We all know Sony makes quality products that raise the standards of the electronics industry higher and higher, and because of that we always equate Sony with quality. After all, the company that designed the Walkman needs to be at the frontline of technology.
Sony has the habit of taking a good thing and making it better. Well, it’s done it again, this time with headphones. The MDR-G52 combines good looks with effective technology – The behind-the-neck headband keeps your hair from getting mussed and allows you to wear a hat comfortably over your head. The MDR-G52’s design rests the headphones over your ears via little rubber grips that seem to mold itself to your head. This allows for an effective, non-slip design that makes jogging and other mobile activity a breeze. Of course, some reviewers will tell you that this design makes for some discomfort, but I’ve personally never had any problems with the headphones. I’ve worn the MDR-G52 on countless roadtrips without ever having to take them off.
Technology utilized in the MDR-G52 matches its aesthetic qualities. Sony packs in 30mm speaker drivers that allow for high quality sound with no outside distortion., handling electric signals from 16 hertz to 20 kilohertz. The headphones also utilize Sony’s Acoustic Turbo Circuit to ensure that the high, low, and midrange sounds pumped out by the headphone speakers are always crisp and rich with bass and treble. The stereo plug is gold plated to allow for more quality when connecting to CD players or other devices, and a 5’ cord allows for freer movement.
The MDR-G52 is fast becoming popular here in America and it’s common to see people wearing them everywhere. At $19.99, after all, they’re a bargain that’s sure to please anyone with a CD player, kids, teens, and adults alike.
You’ve gotta love those Japanese, especially those engineers at Sony. Almost everything they invent is, in the words of Frederik L. Schodt, “the brainchild of a society that prizes miniaturization and an ability to do things without disturbing others.” Miniaturized and effective – words that perfectly describe these headphones perfectly.
The simplicity of that underlying philosophy has sold a lot MDR-G52s.
