| wasatchdp's Full Review: Whistler DE-1660 Radar Detector |
I originally purchased this product because I wanted a radar detector that was in the mid-price range, but had all of the necessary features that I wanted. I picked the 1660 over the 1650 for the Real Voice feature, but in retrospect I would save the money and do without it. After week you recognize the bands by the sound of the alarm and the electronic voice becomes rather annoying.
The sensitivity is very good, it picks up everything. I live out west and do a lot of driving on the open freeway. I have never been caught off guard. It gives ample warning for the speeds I drive (85-90 in 75 mph zone).
I rarely use the 1660 in the city. It gets extremely annoying because it goes off constantly. I tried to use the city mode, but it doesn't silence the laser alarm which has a long annoying laser sound. It usually goes off 8-9 times in my 10 mile drive to work. After that I usually get frustrated and unplug it.
After 8 months the speaker started to static when I adjusted the volume. Now the alarm speaker doesn't work at all. I don't know if the problem is wide spread or if I just got a lemon, but I cannot recommend this detector because of the durability issue. It seems like the volume dial is very cheap.
